I definitely agree with Gordion. Last one doesn't match, it doesn't go... I hope especially the City Plaza(s) and the Sogutozu Center gets built!

North Ankara - is that social housing?

Hello, is Northern Ankara a kind of social housing project?
In Europe, there were lots of substandard houses in old parts of the cities and also slums ans shantytowns. In teh 1960s and 1970s they built big housing projects with tower blocks for workers at reduced rents.
Unfortunately, these blocks became vertical slums because with the crises from 1975 lots of working class people became unemployed and those who could afford it moved to individual houses elsewhere, the social housing estates became ghettoes requiring renewal and social action to integrate the inhabitants into work and society.
Do the same problems occur in Ankara and is this development going to be a ghetto in 20, 30 years or so?
Are these flats rental apartments or will the inhabitants become owners? Usually, owners maintain better their houses and neighbourhoods. In Utrecht there are architecturally speaking similar flats, some as social housing for rent which became problem places (drugs, crime, unemployment) and some owned by the inhabitants who maintain them well, these places are middle class and completely safe. How is the situation as far as that is concerned in Ankara and Turkey?

I think they own the flat, but i am not sure.

Don't know why, but turks prefer to live in a tower and not in a single house.
Actually, don't know why, those bloks never became ghettos in Turkey.

Yep, inhabitants become owners.

But whole project is not consisting of the houses for inhabitants. There will be middle-class and luxurious apartments, congress centers and some other facilities also.. They are building houses for inhabitants for the first phase.

Previous Urban Renewals in Ankara like Dikmen Valley, Portakal Çiçeği Valley became very successful, yet of course this is way bigger and different in some aspects. We will see the results in the next decades I guess..

Nice to see that the houses will be OWNED and not rented, because owners usually care more for their house and neigborhood than tenants. Here in Utrecht we have "commieblocks" neighborhoods, some as rented social housing (these are often problem neighborhoods) and other as owner-occupied buildings (well maintained and without any social problems and crime!). The architecture is exactly similar but the social ambiente not. So, that and the fact that after the slum clearance / rehousing programme luxurious apartments and other facilities will be built is a good thing, especially if these will also will be opened and provide jobs for the dwellers of the slum clearance blocks.
By the way, how do these old neighbourhoods the towers replace looked like? Could some photos of before/after be added to the thread?
Thanks, Domtoren (Utrecht, NL)

Really nice projects in Ankara! Are most of the highrise in a cluster or are they scattered around the city?

I liked the last project but its in wrong place, it won't add anything to Ankara's skyline.
