Yeah, but it was built for the 1990 world cup (capacity 58,500).

I seem to remember that Bari were in and out of Serie A around that time and had enough ambition to sign players like David Platt.

The remnants of the ancient structure were excavated and refurbished. It was an athletics stadium from the very beginning.

I don't see what's so fake about that? Even if you forget about it's ancient history, it's still one of the first stadiums of the modern times, and the first modern Olympic stadium. If that isn't enough history for you.
I get that the old stadium was probably beyond repair, not to mention eyond use. Thinking about it it makes perfect sense, when you imagine the coluseum etc., and the use of that in todays sports.

but to me it just lose all historical value when it's more or less an EXACT replica of an ancient stadium ina "modern" era. fine, it's STILL beautiful, 'cause the ancient stadium was, but it's still just a replica. a stadium built not to show its own time but atime before it.

it's a bit like if we built a stadium to replicate the coluseum. it'd just be a bit too tacky.

anyway. beautiful stadiums (and not just setting): berlin olimpic. end of.

EDIT: the bari stadium is GREAT. though it was built for a football WC and it has a track. FAIL. still a looker and a master piece of engineering, especially roof wise.

Well, it's not my topic so it is not up to me to decide, but I guess, since the original beautiful stadiums topic is gone, we might as well continue it here, and not only post stadiums with beautiful settings. On the other hand that would ruin the intention of this thread, so maybe a new topic is better.

Concerning your discussion rover3: I'm willing to debate, but let's not go on about it for pages. By the way, you call that an intellectual discussion, I have another opinion, no offense. And of course this topic is not only about posting pictures.

@K÷btke: the problem is that we do not know how Panathinaiko looked like in 1890. Second, I wouldn't compare with the Colosseum. Panathinaiko is built on hillsides. They mainly had to repair and replace marble steps and stairs. In the case of the Colosseum, you would probably have to tear it down entirely before reconstruction. In any case I would probably be opposed to it. And to be honest, imagine Panathinaiko being still in its original state today and one suggested reconstructing it, I'm not sure whether I would favour it. It all depends.

Excuse me! How is this off-topic?

Well, what did you want to call it? A pedestrian discussion? I was being kind.

Why can't we continue it here? Seems as good a place as any.

BTW, those pics of AT&T SF-Giants (or someties we call Taco Bell Park ) are just great!!
