Anfield is definitely the most iconic of English club stadiums. Not architecturally. But in terms of history and in terms of the fame of the Kop.

Old Trafford, for all the great players that have called it home and for all its impressive size, has never had the kind of aura that Anfield has.

I included Westfalenstadion because it is the best remaining example that I know of a traditional stadium with four separate stands (even if they have now been awkwardly joined together) that still has great size and grandeur. There are few sights in football as spectacular as the 25,000 capacity Sudtribune terrace:

Westfalen stadion also generally has a fantastic atmosphere and it often, if not usually, has the highest average attendances in world football.

All in all, that's quite enough for it to make it on to the list, IMO.

As to Allianz, it's there primarily because, when built, it was unique. And it spawned a whole new architectural style for football stadiums. And internally, at least, it is still the best example of how a modern, bowl shaped stadium should be configured - steep tiers, close to the pitch. As a lesser reason for inclusion, it also happens to be the home of one of the world's great football clubs.

I see.

Westfalen is perhaps just not iconic to me. Great venue of course.

Anfield, for sure, I disagree with. It may have something but in terms of being truly iconic, is it really up there with somewhere like Hampden Park, for example? In making my own list, I have tried to restrict myself to one stadium per country; I think Spain is the only one that could really merit two but I chose to exclude Camp Nou.

In no particular order:

Wembley Stadium - London - England
Maracana - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
Hampden Park - Glasgow - Scotland
Azteca - Mexico City - Mexico
Bernebeu - Madrid - Spain
El Monumental - Buenos Aires - Argentina
San Siro - Madrid - Italy
Stadio da Luz - Lisbon - Portugal
Amsterdam ArenA - Amsterdam - Netherlands*

* I think this one may seem like a strange choice; I think, however, that it really is an iconic stadium, both in the sense that it is home to Ajax and that it was the first stadium in Europe to have a retractable roof.

Maybe not really "iconic" in some ways, but imho one of the best in term of "main events", especially in its short history (11 years) :

Stade de France : (81,338 seats)

2 World cup finals (IRB 2007+FIFA 1998) + some games of the 1999 IRB WC
2 UEFA Champions League finals (2000 & 2006)
1 FIFA confederations cups final
1 IAAF world championships in athletics
1 annual IAAF Golden league meeting

and.....

1 UEFA Euro final (2016 )

I have been to both the old and new Wembley, don’t get me wrong the new stadium is amazing, but I just does not have the character of the old one.

No, not yet at least. But I'm happy enough to trade less character for decent toilets, seats you can fit into, decent food outlets, better sightlines etc.

The old Wembley was a real tip on my (only) visit there 11 years ago.

That said, my only match at the old Wembley was the play-off final between Charlton and Sunderland (3-3 FT, 4-4 AET, 7-6 on penalties) which was voted the greatest match ever at Wembley by FourFourTwo Magazine even ahead of the '66 world cup final, so that kinda made up for the shittiness of the stadium! How lucky is that? The only match I went to at that stadium was voted the best one ever played there?!

I get your point though.

I guess it will take the new Wembley a good few years to get it own character, but you right it does have much better toilets and overall the new Wembley is amazing

I think Centenario is pretty iconic as well, being host to the first WC final and stuff. I don't know if it's famous outside South America just like it's here, indeed.

seems like everyone agrees in:

1.- Wembley, London (going up, UCL final, and 2018 WC coming, time will only enrich its history)

2.- Maracanna, Rio de Janeiro (going up, WC 2014 and 2016 OG comming, also a refubrish comming soon)

5.- Azteca, México City (steady, A history and capacity not to be surpassed anytime soon, still a little work might do well)

My other choices will be

3.- Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid (Steady, great host and capacity, needs more international events, althougt UCL Final comming soon).

4.- Nou Camp, Barcelona (Steady, same as Bernabeu, going up if expansion goes ahead)

6.- Old Trafford, Manchester (going up, superb host, posible expansion, and venue of olimpic football, and 2018 WC)

7.- San Siro, Milan (going down, no big events comming, needs a lot of work to mantain its status. Capacity, history and hosting clubs keep it there.)

8.- Anfield, Liverpool (steady, history and fans, but way to small for modern times, the new proposed stadium at Stanley Park could be a great succesor)

9.- Allianz Arena, Munich (going up, nothing wrong with it, just needs more time to have more history and character)

10.-Stade de France, Paris (steady, the sidelines and lack of constant use keep it in this position, capacity is great)

Runner ups:
Bombonera, Buenos Aires (steady)
Monumental, Buenos Aires (going down)
Westfalenstadion, Dourtmond (steady)
Olimpico, Roma (steady)
Morumbi, Sao Paolo (??? depends on work for the 2014 WC)
Centenario, Montevideo (going down)
Emirates, London (going up)
Celtic Park, Glasgow (going down)
Ibrox, Glasgow (steady)
