What caused the population to almost double in just 20 years?

Coal mining. Upper Silesia was second Ruhrgebiet, the most important industrial area of Prussia and second most important of the whole Germany - that's why division of Upper Silesia (into Polish, Czech and German part) was such an impact to the Weimar Republic.
These years, Upper Silesia noticed a giant increase in population, the administration couldn't follow the increase - for example, Zabrze (Hindenburg) in 1922 was the biggest village in Europe (and second biggest administrative country after Wrocław/Breslau in Silesia province), with a population about 127,000 people! Sadly, today in Upper Silesia we notice a huge decrease of population, in last 20 years (1989-2009) Katowice decreased from 368,261 to 308,724 (-16,2%), Bytom from 239,900 to 182,749 (-23,8% but a town of Radzionkˇw had leave Bytom), Chorzˇw noticed a fall from 138,244 to 113,314 (-18% but the biggest population of Chorzˇw, in year 1977 was 156,000 people!).
