The World is Coming to Tampa

The live aboard cruise ship is coming to Tampa during the Superbowl

Tampa, Florida: 30 Jan 2009 to 3 Feb 2009
Tampa’s early days, which began roughly 320 years after Ponce de León first arrived here in 1513, can be retraced in Ybor City, one of only three National Historic Landmark District’s in Florida and once home to a bustling cigar industry. Galleries, shops, restaurants and clubs now enliven this legendary town. Then visit the former playground of the rich and famous – H.B. Plant Hall on the Tampa University campus. Replete with Moorish revival turrets, it is only rivalled by the elaborate Victorian gingerbread work adorning the Henry B. Plant Museum.
While the homes on man-made Davis Island evoke “The Great Gatsby,” nearby Busch Gardens offers naturalistic animal habitats and entertainment for all ages. Modern additions to the cityscape include the glass-domed Florida Aquarium, the sleek Tampa Museum of Art, the boldly shaped Museum of Science and Industry, and world-class Tampa Bay Performing Arts Centre. Round out your visit with a stop at Tampa Theatre, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and a local landmark.

The World, the only private residential community at sea, first set sail in 2002 and has since visited over 250 countries. The vessel has announced its itinerary for 2009, and will be offering its Residents and Guests a year of thrilling journeys, including a stop in Seoul, South Korea – the ship’s first ever visit to this populous capital city. The striking, 12-deck, 644 foot-long floating home is a pioneer in the luxury vacation home industry and remains the largest private yacht at sea. The vessel is owned by her Residents, who play a decisive role in planning and choosing the ship’s yearly voyages. With a continuous worldwide itinerary that enables the vessel to span the globe every two-three years, the ship is a complete floating city, equipped with high-end facilities and luxurious amenities that create an intimate, refined atmosphere for Residents and Guests.

A month-by-month breakdown of the itinerary follows:

JANUARY

The World begins 2009 with the ever-popular Captain’s Choice, which are planned – although unannounced – stops sprinkled throughout the year. By January 3, the vessel will arrive in Barbados’ capital city, Bridgetown, before making stops in Castries, St. Lucia, and Roseau, Dominica. A visit to Frederiksted, St. Croix, will mark the ship’s maiden call to this town in the U.S. Virgin Islands. After brief journeys to the British Virgin Islands and Turks & Caicos, the vessel arrives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a two-week dry dock period. During this time, the ship will receive significant refurbishments with renovations taking place in signature restaurants Tides and East, updates to the ship’s verandahs and pool areas, addition of new furniture in public spaces, and more. Following, The World will spend the rest of the month in Florida, where Residents and Guests can enjoy a number of fine museums and dining along the water in Fort Lauderdale, and the Busch Gardens amusement park, the Lowry Zoo, and sea parks in Tampa.

Cool! This will be fun.

I still can't wait until the Super Bowl thread I created hits the forefront of the NASF forums later this year. That thread will be full of action!
