Crime in Cape Town
I've chosen 2007/2008 murder statistics over a period of 1 year to show how crime is concentrated to townships in Cape Town. This is one reason we have a thriving tourism industry and the highest murder rates in the world. I don't get it, so if we know where the issue is why are the SAPS not sending in the army tanks or patrols??!?!?

That`s astonishingly disturbing! What did I say!? Your statistc points to the areas of the problem and not the solution. The first thing as a solution should be, what are the causes of the crime ? Before anything can be done.

Those townships are dangerous, man. Except for an occasional Mitchell's Plain, I don't venture into any of the other areas.

wow... it's weird because the people who actually voted for this government (and will still probably vote the same next year) are actually the people most affected by the crime...interesting.

I know Cape Town only as a tourist (I have visited the city three times now), so I certainly have never been in the townships. I go to the relatively safe areas such as Green Point, the Waterfront and the City Centre. Still, I got ambushed once by a group of men with knives. They didn't look like they were members of the welcome committee of Cape Town. Still, I managed to put a very broad smile on my face and handed over my money. I hope they did something useful with it. I don't care about the money as long as it is well-spent.

No, unacceptable! I do not care who robbed you, such actions no matter how "nicely" it's done can never be condoned. That is YOUR money, NOT theirs... there are too many people in S.Africa today who have no respect for their fellow human-being and their property. ![]() We cannot have attacks or robberies of any kind on anyone, especially tourists... many are not as forgiving and calm about it as you are. They will go home and rip our city to sheds and damage our tourism industry with their bad experiences here.IMO There is no such thing as "acceptable crime levels," one rape, one murder, one armed robbery, one hijack is ONE TOO MUCH!!! We need to work at eradicating these evil, disrespectful, inhumane people out of S.African society. |

Well, actually I was quite upset at the time, but fortunately it was only money that I lost. However, I will certainly be back somewhere next year or the year after that. You live in a country that is just too beautiful to ignore. I am not sure the crime level will scare away that many tourists. People are aware there is always a certain risk travelling to Africa and you still live in a relatively safe part of it. Besides, there aren't too many countries on the African continent which have the same level of accomodation and facilities.

Where did this crime happen? Was it in the day or at night? And was it recently?

I am not totally sure (it happened a couple of years ago in 2004), but I believe it was on Somerset Road. It happened at broad daylight.

Sad to hear but quite rare nowadays for that kind of thing to happen in Green Point.

Somerset Road, DeWaterkant... oh dear, that is supposed to be a good area. It's part of the Green Point CID. Does anyway know if they have installed CCTV coverage there now?

Transport security boost for 2010
October 12 2008 Safety and security preparations for transport during the 2010 World Cup are already well under way in many parts of the country. Security will be beefed up on trains, highways and even some smaller roads. The 2010 Western Cape co-ordinator from the Department of the premier, Dr Laurine Platzky, said visible policing was an important part of the strategy to make locals and visitors feel safe. "More police are in training and will be deployed on public transport, at stations, bus and taxi ranks." According to Platzky, one of the challenges Cape Town has managed to overcome is bringing alignment between the province, the City of Cape Town and the 2010 organising committee. The city had learnt a lot about sharing informa-tion and benefited from the experience of other countries which had held similar events. "The objective of the 2010 soccer World Cup is delivering an excellent World Cup to make us all proud." Senior Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said the plans for transport and other security were ready and they were currently building on capacity and capability. "We are improving on manpower with 55 000 additional police and the focus is to safeguard the 2010 Fifa World Cup. "In terms of venue security, which is the responsibility of Fifa and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), they will recruit volunteers, marshals and private security. "We will be using the services of reservists before, during and after the World Cup." Naidoo indicated that the public should expect to see a huge presence of police, Metro police and road traffic officers who would take "a zero-tolerance approach". "So far we have police deployed in Metro Rail service in Tshwane, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. "We also have a National Mobile Train Unit which deploys members on the long-distance trains. We have seen a remarkable decrease in the reporting of crime within this environment." Platzky said the province realised the importance of minibus taxis to World Cup transport and engagement with the industry was essential and had now begun in some areas. "This engagement will be increased over the next few months in order to bring economic opportunities to the industry." Platzky said the Cape had already moved from the planning to the implementation stage and budgets were being finalised. Jacqui Gooch, from the provincial Department of Transport, said: "This is an African Fifa World Cup and we have to make it as safe as possible. "It is a joint venture between different depart-ments; we share ideas as to how we can make the World Cup a success. "The city also consults with experts who specialise in these kinds of events to seek advice from them." Gooch said safety and security programmes would be put in place and CCTV cameras would installed in the Metro. There would also be programmes where volunteers will make sure people get onto the right buses and are given the right directions. Dedicated parking facilities would be available but the public would be encouraged to use public transport to avoid traffic congestion. There would also be road closures in certain areas leading to stadiums. |
