DETROIT | Greektown Casino Hotel | 105m | 344ft | 30 fl | Com

http://www.greektowncasino.com/GeneralInfo/2008.htm
http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=243853

Since there is no thread on this I thought I would start one since I just went downtown and took some pics.

Should be completed in Fall/Winter 2008 and is scheduled to open January 2009... but with Greektown's bankruptcy who knows? Also, it looks like there's only 1 more floor to go.

Here are some plans:

Pics - Taken 2008-07-14:

Thought this was kind of cool, it shows how many empty parking spaces there are per level:

The facade is very original. I love how it's not all the same color and the blue that they used is stunning.

It's a pity that on such a huge block 80%+ is just parking... personally I hate all parking structures as they take up too much space for their use (purely parking) and add to urban sprawl and the suburban lifestyle. New buildings in Detroit have mostly been relegated to the role of parking. People wonder why they have long commutes and complain about driving an hour or two to and from work everyday but if they took mass transit (if Detroit had "real" mass transit... so in this case that is more difficult) or didn't live so far away from where they worked, there would not be such a huge commute (or parking) issue.

It's so nice when you can say "I'm going to Greektown" and all you have to do is get out of your residence and walk a few blocks to the building or take the bus or People Mover. No gas, no car, no car payments, no insurance, no registration... must I go on? Living downtown may be more expensive at first (per square foot... Detroit isn't that much more expensive for other things downtown) but it's hard to believe all the money you end up saving by doing so.

Didn't that parking garage used to be an abandoned building? Or was it a different one in that area correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways I saw this building last week and it looks good in the skyline. The glass looks real nice. I wonder if they'll lite it up at night like the Motor City Casino.

The old Greektown Casino was an old or abandoned bakery I think. The new garage was built after they demolished a city parking garage.

No there was a city owned parking parking garage and senior apartment building on that block

The casino is in former Trapper's Alley a group of 1850's warehouses that were connected in the 1980's and turned into a mall/marketplace.

Oh warehouse! I thought it was something along those lines... it seems like forever ago when the casinos came in to Detroit about... 10, 11 years ago? My how time flies... and so does money

Glad to see development in Detroit! Is this the tallest project in Detroit at the moment?

This (sadly) is not only the tallest project under construction in Detroit, but the only high rise project currently under construction in Detroit.

The good news is that Quicken Loans should be building a new HQ downtown soon (but who knows if it will actually be tall enough to be considered a high rise, just like Compuware they may just build some large sprawling building consisting of 80% parking). Dow Chemical Co. and the Petrochemical Industries Co. of Kuwait are supposed to be building a joint-venture HQ around downtown as well (hopefully).

Here's some good job news for the Casino.

Greektown lays out plans to hire 400 hotel workers
Nathan Hurst / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Greektown Casino will begin hiring some 400 full-time workers Thursday to work at its permanent hotel, scheduled to open in January.

Greektown is partnering with Detroit's Workforce Development Department to get as many workers from the city as possible, spokesman Roger Martin said. Under their agreement, the city will pre-screen job candidates for the jobs. Those who qualify will be invited to a recruitment event later this month, where they will be interviewed.

"We're seeking high-caliber applicants from the city of Detroit and elsewhere to staff what will be a world-class hotel resort," said Craig Ghelfi, Greektown's CEO. "The people we hire to staff our hotel must demonstrate an ability to deliver the exemplary guest service for which we are known."

Available positions include jobs in catering, housekeeping, facilities, food and beverage, restaurant and security services.

The announcement of the new hires come about a month after Greektown laid off 89 workers from its casino operation, the result of a downturn in the local and national gambling markets.

Greektown filed for bankruptcy in late May, a move that is allowing the city's smallest casino by revenue to shuffle its debt and obtain financing needed to complete construction of its expanded gaming floor, expected to open in October, and the new 400-room hotel.

As much as Detroit needs the development - I can't stand that parking garage. Its massive taking up a huge percentage of the projects space, terribly auto-centric and frankly its design doesn't match really match the rest of the building. It comes off as a disgusting slug like appendage on an otherwise quite beautiful tower. Still, jobs are jobs though...

It's great to see Detroit on the rise again. Maybe it'll become the Vegas of the Great Lakes.
