I'd love to see an Uruguay/Argentina 2030 WC!

Good for Uruguay!, hope they build it. Montevideo and the uruguayan football really need a good stadium.

Hi people! I am from argentina and, of course, I reckon that the final match of that hopeful 2030 WC is in Monumental Stadium. I say this because this stadium is even bigger and since i am fan of river haha.. well, taking seriously, it would be a pleasure to held such an important issue as the wc. I think that if uruguay and argentinean people work together this might be possible. Supose that uruguay stands 5 stadium and argentina other 8 this can be held. 2 Stadiums in montevideo (URU) 3 distributed i dont know where because uruguay doesnt have any other big city. then 2 stadiums in Buenos aires 1 in cordoba 1 rosario 1 mendoza 1 tucuman 1 mar del plata and thats all. i am expectant to know wether this is or not happening. PD: (SORRY FOR MY PRECARIOUS LEVEL OF ENGLISH)

I agree. I know the Centenario has all the history, but from what I can tell, it would need such a huge renovation to bring it into line with modern facilities, that a complete demolition and rebuild would be more appropriate. I'm sure there are many Uruguayans that would disagree with me.

the elegance of the roof and similarity of form remind me alot of saitama world cup stadium.
also looks quite similar to one of the generic stadiums in recent fifa games. all that aside, this is a damn sexy stadium |

Talking about cookie cutter stadiums. Have you seen Costa Rica's Nacional Stadium recently built? Estadio Parque looks almost identical in it's roof structure and the rest of the stadium look very similar as well. So, I think this stadium is far from original.

it will be difficult to find a way to create a roof design without changing Centenario's characteristics... I don't know if it's possible to refurbish the stadium up to FIFA's standarts without demolishing the historical Estadio Centenario

Of course there is, a light roof over the top with a new main stand and it would do fine (along concourse and facility upgrades to the other three stands. Also I can't imagine FIFA requiring 100% roof coverage, especially in a place with a climate like Montevideo. A new similarly designed covered main stand with VIP, press and player facilities and some refurbishment the rest the way around and it would be top notch again.Just because designers have made such a boondoggle out renovations like the Maracana for instance doesn't mean they have to destroy 90% of the Centenario in order to get a good stadium. |

Maracanã has been almost all demolished but its facade is still there and, the most important, that unforgettable atmosphere hasn't changed. Besides, the stadium was like a new one, but not in FIFAs standards. Estadio Centenario, on the other hand, is not in a good condition (the structure seems to be failing haha). They could make a refurbish like the germans did on Berlins olympic stadium, keeping that unique old structure and changing the most part of of the stadium. And I still think that a roof is not a good option, the slope of the stands unables the construction of a all covered stadium.

Does look a lot cheaper, but very functional; good sightlines, easy egress, nice proportions and with the weather in Uruguay a roof isn't really needed. Though the old plan was certainly more eye catching, more inspired.

The design is nice. I only wish they add a facade for the outside of the stadium.
