The Notre Dame d'Afrique

The Notre Dame d'Afrique (Our Lady of Africa) is the basilica of Algiers, Algeria.

It was inaugurated in 1872, after fourteen years of construction. The architect, Fromageau, was named in 1859 as chief architect for ecclesiastical buildings in French Algeria by the minister of Colonies, and he used the byzantine style that was very much in vogue for church buildings in France at that time. Its floorplan is particular in that sense that the choir is situated on the southeast in stead of the usual east side of the building.

The Mausolée royale de Maurétanie

Historic monument from Numid & Roman time

Numidia (202 BC – 46 BC) was an ancient Berber kingdom in present-day Algeria and part of Tunisia (North Africa) that later alternated between being a Roman province and being a Roman client state, and is no longer in existence today. It was located on the eastern border of modern Algeria, bordered by the Roman province of Mauretania (modern day Algeria) to the west, the Roman province of Africa (modern day Tunisia) to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Sahara Desert to the south. Its people were the Numidians.

Tlemcen

Some picture from Tlemcen
Tlemcen is a town in Northwestern Algeria, and the capital of the the province of the same name. Its population is 132,341 as of the 1998 census. Located inland, it is located in the center of a region known for its olive plantations and vineyards. The city has developed leather, carpet, and textile industries, which it ships to the port of Rashgun for export.

Its centuries of rich history and culture have made the city a center of a unique blend of music and art. Its textiles and handicrafts, its elegant blend of Arab, Berber, and French cultures, and its cool climate in the mountains have made it an important center of tourism in Algeria. It is home to two beautiful tombs - that of Sidi Boumédiènne, whose tomb adjoins to a mosque, and Houari Boumédiènne, the second president of Algeria

Timgad ruins

Timgad (Arabic, تيمقاد, called Thamugas or Thamugadi by the Romans) was a Roman colonial town in North Africa founded by the Emperor Trajan around 100 AD. The ruins are noteworthy for being one of the best extant examples of the grid plan as used in Roman city planning.

The ruins of the town are located in modern-day Algeria, about 35 km from the town of Batna. The city was founded ex nihilo as a military colony, primarily as a bastion against the Berbers in the nearby Aures Mountains. It was originally populated largely by Parthian veterans of the Roman army who were granted lands in return for years in service.

Annaba/ Hippone My city

Annaba was first settled by Phoenicians as Hippo Regius and allied with Carthage. Hippo Regius was a haven for the Numidian kings until it became a Roman colony in 46BC after Numidia was annexed by Caesar. Under Roman rule Hippo Regius flourished commercially. It was also a centre for Christianity until it was sacked by Vandals during the 5th century. The Byzantines captured the city and rebuilt it during the 6th century. Following the Arab invasion of the 7th century, the city of Annaba was built some 2km from Hippo Regius, which was pillaged and neglected.

The French were repelled by Annaba's citizens for two years, but the city finally fell in 1832. As an operations base for allied forces during World War II Annaba was heavily bombarded by the German air force during the winter of 1942-3.

Saint Augustine (IPA: [ɔˈɡʌstɪn], au·gus·tin[citation needed], Greek: Αὐγουστῖνος Ἱππῶνος, November 13, 354 – August 28, 430), Bishop of Hippo, in Algeria, was a philosopher and theologian. Augustine, a Latin Father and Doctor of the Church, is one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. Augustine was radically influenced by Platonic doctrines.[1] He framed the concepts of original sin and just war. When the Roman Empire in the West was starting to disintegrate, Augustine developed the concept of the Church as a spiritual City of God, distinct from the material City of Man.[2] His thought profoundly influenced the medieval worldview.

Spectacular. Very beautiful.
Lots of Roman sites for a pretty much, frontier territory. It was close to Italy though I guess.
