phunky, I myself would like to see more security personnel roaming the subway and buses. A few months back some coked up black guy tried to start a fight with me at Finch station during rush hour for no reason whatsoever (claimed I was "shoving" my way on to a train, and when I was walking away from him he was following me trying to get me to fight, fortunately he eventually gave up). One of these days I'm gonna have to take some self defense classes or carry a pocketknife on me or something, so when I do run into a nut case (which on a whole, happens more and more these days) I'll have some options besides walking away if necessary.

Yeah. They claim northwest Toronto is serviced (or will be) by the Spadina extension and that east Toronto is serviced by the Scarborough RT, but southwest Toronto is currently serviced by the Bloor line much better than these two areas, plus there is all day GO service with decent frequency during the rush hours.

If you live in the southwest communities, either take a bus to Bloor or time a GO train, really no need for this idea.

It's not that simple.. I live there and it's a pain in the ass to get anywhere.

The southwest and northwest of Toronto have horrible transit options for getting downtown.

I think if either of these ideas ever came to light I would have to dust off the ol' pitchfork.

The cameras are actually a waste of money. Why? Because they don't prevent crime, they are only useful after a crime has occured. Avoiding your face being noticed by the camera is not the most complicated feat either, and if the face is not captured, then the camera is pretty much useless anyway. The unions complain about driverless trains or the automation of fare collection since that would mean TTC collector booths would no longer need staff, but if they were to take that staff and create station masters with some staff and put all the rest into security staff on board trains, it would create a much higher degree of safety because it greatly increases the odds of the criminal being apprehended at the scene. The new subway cars not having doors between cars is also valuable as a security feature from this point of view. The TTC is being far too reactive instead of pre-emptive in their security policy IMO.

I totally agree TRZ. It isn't preventative at all. Plus I don't wanna turn into the US or the UK. You are being watched at all times there.

Just wanted to point out that the TTC has been working on preparing lower Bay for doors open for the last few weeks. New doors leading down from Bay have been installed and they are now working on the staircase leading down to the station.

I hope the don't clean it though. When I passed through there due to the route change a few months ago, the grunginess was certainly a part of its charm. Get rid of that and it'd be a bit plain..

I think seeing a clean subway station would be a real novelty for us

Its not really much of a waste. The station is still used by TTC staff so fixing up the entry points makes it safer for them. If its done well enough, in the future if there is ever rerouting like we saw a few weeks ago, the TTC might even be able to use lower bay station.

say like in a circle line one day, perhaps. But this would screw up the YUS line rather badly, so will not happen.

How would a circle line screw up the YUS line??? See the one I suggested above, if anything it would relieve pressure at downtown transfer stops and increase transit productivity in the core.

The Wye that exists and not regularly used was intended for a system that predates the Spadina Line. The Spadina line kills just about any potential for a circle line, because if St. George is not the terminus of the Y-U Line, which it isn't as the Y-U-S Line, then service patterns will be grossly screwed, and St. George or Spadina (or both) would become a nightmare. The system is way more convenient and easy to navigate without the Wye. The best approach would be a dowtown relef line of some sort.

I think there is a misunderstanding here: What the heck is the Wye??? I'm just talking about a circle RT line (LRT, BRT, subway, monorail, flying teleporter, etc.) that would follow the Queen/Keele/Eglinton/Don Mills-Coxwell corridors, thus improving transit through midtown, downtown, and old Toronto, as well as reduce overcrowding at our current junction stops.

referring to the post that replied to the post about using Lower Bay for regular service in future would mean using the Wye (the Wye is what allows B-D trains to run through on the Uni). The chain of replies has obviously caused some confusion since I thought you were referring to a downtown circle with the current system layout (somewhat reintroducing what was going on in 1966).
