Stuttgart, the greenest city in Germany

Seen from above Stuttgart gives the impression of a forest interspersed with houses. Few other cities in Europe can boast so much greenery.

The downside of the city is its center. It consists almost exclusively of modern, dull, albeit functional buildings. Its suburbs though are very pleasant.

Another positive side is its transport system. Suburban railway (S-Bahn) and metro/tram (Stadtbahn) make moving round the city very easy.

The mixed system of tram and metro is very convenient. In downtown it circulates underground, while in the suburbs it functions as a tram. Unlike conventional trams it runs fast and it has an impressive acceleration when it moves uphill. For spectacular views of the city I recommend line U15 towards the south.

Although Esslingen is a separate town, it is so close to Stuttgart that I include it in this thread. If it could be transferred in central Stuttgart it would turn it into a perfect city.

Excellent thread!

I love how green Stuttgart is and the Stadtbahn system looks really impressive from the reading I've done on it!

Could you get pictures of the cog/rack railway that exists in the city too?

their s-bahn/u-bahn system is easy to use and best of all it's free...almost...no one actually pays to ride it and tickets are rarely checked...it's not like riding the tube in london where you have to go through a ticket turnstile gate.
i love that you can hope on and off as you please

I'd pay simply to make sure that they continue maintaining and improving the system... Seems a bit unfair to use something and not pay.

Nice city in a beautiful setting...but feels like a much smaller city than it is. Some streets seem pretty dead, did you take some pictures on a holiday?

Saw this "buddy bear exhibition" in Warsaw recently in June 2008.

Unfortunately I did not bother taking pictures of those systems during the few days I stayed in Stuttgart. Now it is too late. This section only allows us to publish our own pictures.

Wrong. I was controlled in the S-Bahn on a Sunday morning. I had the special 3-day ticket for tourists (only 12.80 Euros for unlimited rides in the whole network, S-Bahn, Stadtbahn and buses).

The pictures in Esslingen were taken in a rainy Sunday morning, that's why there was nobody outside.
