Danube Bridge II Vidin - Kalafat [Bulgaria : Romania]
![]() The bridge would have a length of 1971m and was designed by Fernández Casado S.L. and FCC Construction's technical service department of FCC Construction. Construction was expected to be completed within three years of the start. FCC has won the tender to build the bridge, but also the road and rail infrastructure on the Bulgarian side. The Spanish firm would be paid 162 million euro for the works, while the total costs of the project, including construction on the Romanian side, was estimated at 236 million euro. When completed, Danube Bridge 2 would become a part of European Transport Corridor IV between Dresden in Germany and Istanbul in Turkey. ![]() ![]() A couple of videos describing the technical specifications of the Bridge. When is the scheduled start date? What part of Vidin will the bridge pass through, north, central, south? Will the motorway head south directly to Sofia? Thanks

@ x-type . All of the obove are the official renders. The bridge has 2 main parts. Check out the videos - they are quite illustrative about everything.
@ smokiboy. The construction already started, it is also supposed to be finished till the end of 2010 , but i think it will be no earlier than 2011. The site is 3-4 kilometres north of Vidin(up the river stream). There is no motorway currently from Vidin to Sofia, but the national road [E79] from Vidin to Botevgrad(where it meets [A2] Hemus Motorway) has been renovated throughoutly by the austrian Strabag few years ago and is in perfect condition. Currently some parts of it are under upgrade to 2x2 and in the national transport strategy there are plans the whole stretch of [E79] from Vidin to Botevgrad to become 2x2 expressway till 2015. Take a look at the 2nd photo.
The first picture shows the part of the bridge on the right side of the island(in the deeper part of the river where the ships on the Danube will pass). The 3rd photo shows the part of the bridge on the left side of the island(in the shallow part of the river). You might be right about the 3rd photo though ... it doesn't look quite right, really. |

i'd say that 3rd photo is alternative project because it doesn't seem to me that at the right side is island, i think it's allready right bank. look at number of spans, there is 8 of them, and it is too much for only this less part of river between island and left bank, don't you think so?

3rd photo goes down. It really isn't from the final render of the bridge. You are right. ![]() Anyway , the videos i posted are very illustrative about each and every single segment of the bridge. |

How many km from Vidin to Sofia? Do you know the condition of highways in Kalafat and further north?
Off topic question, what is the condition of the highway from Sofia to Serbian border? And are there plans to upgrade it to full motorway standard? If so is it considered a high priority? Thanks Turnovec. |

Sofia-Kalotina is in very good condition. They recently upgraded it to 2x2. And yes, there are plans for a highway, because the section between Sofia and the border with Serbia is part of Trakya highway. Unfortunately this section of the highway is considered as high priority. We should finish first Struma highway(towards Greece), Marica(Towards Turkey) and Trakya form Sofia to Burgas. |

It would be logical to extend a motorway from Kalafat to Craiova and further east to Bucharest.

Well that's the sign on the Bulgarian side of the river. AFAIK Romania has obliged to pay all the infrastructure on its bank of the river.
