The first stay cables of Danube Bridge Vidin-Calafat, 10.11.2011



The installation of the first pair of stay cables of the unique, in Bulgaria, combined railway cable-stayed bridge over the Danube at Vidin-Calafat has started. The beginning is at the eighth pair of segments of the superstructure of the bridge at pier PB9, which are among the most loaded. After the installation of the stay cables they shall be tensioned. Only then will it be proceeded to the assembly of the next pair of segments – the ninth one.

On each of the four piers of the bridge superstructure in the navigable channel of the Danube there will be installed 13 pairs of stay cables. They are made of high-quality stainless steel core, HDPE-protection and a metal pipe.

The installation of the cable –stayed construction is being executed by the Spanish company, subcontractor under the project “Danube Bridge Vidin-Calafat” – BBR-PTE.

Pier PB11 of Danube Bridge Vidin-Calafat reached the utmost height – the third one out of four in the navigable channel of the river. The pier is 43,30 m high. There are 24 piles in its foundation at a depth of up to 78 meters. The pile cap, built in the shape of a truncated pyramid over the piles, is 6 m high. At the top of pier PB11 are erected two towers, each one 27,18 meters. To protect the foundation of the pier from potential collisions of ships or other heavy objects there will be 19 pairs of vessel impact protections installed, each weighing from 80 to 120 tons. Fourteen pairs of them have already been installed.

The construction of the railway approach between abutment A1 and abutment A2 and the construction of the bridge deck are still going on in the non-navigable channel of the Danube River. The implementation of the bridge construction at the end of October is 70%.

As far as the adjoining infrastructure is concerned, the construction of the road and railway junctions is in progress, as well as the direct approach road to the bridge. Finishing works are carried out in and around the buildings of the Passengers’ and the Freight Stations. The implementation of the construction works at the end of October is 78%.

The segments at pier PB11 of Danube Bridge Vidin-Calafat are being lifted, 27.02.2012

The assembly of the segments of the superstructure of the bridge Vidin-Calafat was started at pier РВ11 in the navigation channel of the river.
A total number of 178 segments with weight up to 240 tons will continue the superstructure of the bridge in the navigable channel of the Danube River. They all are produced in the production plant of the company – Constructor, FCC Construccion, which is situated in the free Zone Vidin. Each pair of segments is transported by a barge from the production plant to the respective pier where they are assembled with the help of a crane /girder trus/, mounted on the respective pier in the river by highly specialized engineering and technical staff. Each segment has its individual parameters, depending on its place in the structure of the road installation. The assembly of the segments is executed in pairs which are prestressed with steel cables.

The length of the superstructure of the bridge in the navigable channel of the river is 746 meters, and in the non-navigable – 650 m. The first 300 smaller segments of the superstructure (with weight from 80 – to 120 tons each) are assembled in the non-navigable channel of the river – from Abutment A2 to Pier PB8. Nineteen pairs of the large segments have already been assembled in the navigation channel of the Danube River at pier PB9, and at pier PB10 are assembled 13 pairs and 5 pairs of stay cables.



The construction of the cantilever wings of the superstructure of the bridge in the non-navigable channel is going on, as well as the completion of the construction of the pylons of the last pier of the bridge in Romanian territorial waters – PB12. The construction of the railway approach to the bridge is proceeding.
