JEDDAH | Wind Towers | 120 fl | 80 fl | Pro

King Abdullah Economic City Wind Towers
Saudi Arabia

Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
Adrian Smith, Consulting Design Partner
Gordon Gill, Associate Partner + Lead Designer

Client: EMAAR Properties PJSC

Design Completed: 2006

Image Credit: © EMAAR Properties PJSC

Wind Towers anchor each corner of the Financial Island.

A 120-story landmark tower is visible throughout the city. The highly sustainable tower includes a photovoltaic exterior wall and is oriented and formed to take advantage of the winds from the Red Sea to generate energy. The tower rises above the surrounding development and sets a new standard for environmental design in the region.

On the eastern edge is a hotel tower standing at approximately 80 stories. This facetted tower takes advantage of harbor views and is designed with a face that is folded to glimmer in the sun.

Woah, Adrian Smith is making his name all over the Middle East. Emaar is a serious developer so I'm sure that this will probably happen.

I like the first design.

good looking, but not much floor space with all those cut-outs. Seems like all efforts have gone into estatics, rather than practicallity.

Spectacular looking towers, Jeddah's skyline is definitely turning around since I last visited about 8 years ago.

The second design would fit in Jeddah perfectly. I can't wait to visit Jeddah.

This project isn't planned for Jeddah. It's for a new under-construction city King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC, Rabigh) which is around 160km from Jeddah.

well 80% of Adrian Smith buisness is from the middle east. matter of fact he spends 2 weeks each month in the middle east. Dubai gave him a 2nd career.
heres a video on him and his firm
