I'll cheer when they expand and extend the KL Monorail

Hitachi and Bombardier are serious builders of monorail lines that are "metro'ish" (sorry, Im looking for a better term), meaning that they are acting like main lines in a city...

Scomi...well, they're not exactly a close 3rd, you know...only got the KL Monorail line and that truly isnt saying much

When the KL Monorail is extended from Brickfields to MidValley City and the screwup at KL Sentral is solved....and expanded to 4 (or more) carriage trains with 2-5 minute frequencies...well, then we can cheer for the monorail...

Oh, and Scomi...build an 8-carriage monorail train...and operate it successfully in KL 's climate for a year...then you will have me convinced

Cheers, m

Melewar unit in consortium to secure Penang monorail

Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

KUALA LUMPUR: Melewar Industrial Group Bhd unit Melewar Metro Sdn Bhd (MMSB), which is vying for the estimated RM1.2 billion monorail project in Penang, has formed a consortium with Putera Capital Bhd to co-operate to jointly secure the project.

In a statement yesterday, Melewar Group said the consortium was formalised with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MMSB’s wholly-owned subsidiary Melewar Metro (Penang) Sdn Bhd (MMP) and Putera Capital. MMSB made the proposal for the monorail project via its subsidiary.

Melewar Group said the consortium has submited a tender-compliant offer and three alternative offers for the turnkey design, build and operated monorail system Hi-Track (Ultra Light Loop Monorail) for the government’s consideration.

It added that MMSB and Putera Capital would enter a share sale agreement under which the former would hold an 80% stake in MMP and the latter the remainder 20%. It said the share sale agreement would be concluded later subject to other terms and conditions to be agreed by the parties.

“The MoU shall determine upon execution of the share sale agreement between the parties or if the company fails to secure the proposed project within 12 months from the date of the MoU, whichever is earlier,” it said.

Melewar, Putera Capital submit monorail proposal
Friday December 14, 2007

KUALA LUMPUR: Melewar Industrial Group Bhd and Putera Capital Bhd have submitted a proposal to the Government for the turnkey design of and to build and operate Penang island’s monorail system.

The proposal was delivered on Nov 14, which was also the closing date of the tender.

Melewar managing director and chief executive officer Tunku Datuk Yaacob Tunku Abdullah said the decision to submit the bid was not an idea that occurred overnight.

Melewar had initiated the monorail proposal back in 2003 but the project later became a government-funded one instead of a private financing initiative, he told reporters after the signing of an agreement between the two companies yesterday.
He said the initial proposal involved a loop system valued at about RM1.6bil. The current monorail system, however, involves a longer dual track, hence the higher price.

The consortium’s proposal involves a tender compliant offer as well as three alternative offers.

Without divulging the proposed cost, Yaacob said the suggested model utilised steel structures, which were less disruptive to traffic, and facilitated faster deployment and were more cost effective than other compositions.

“Steel is pre-fabricated, lightweight and requires little piling for the foundation. By putting up the facilities faster, the monorail owner would be able to generate revenue more quickly,” he said, adding that this would also reduce interest payments on financing.

While the consortium does not have a track record in building monorails, its technology partners, Russia’s Transstroy Corp and Intamin Transportation from Switzerland were involved in the Moscow monorail.

Melewar Integrated Engineering Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Uwe Ahrens said the success of such public transport systems lay in their design and implementation, and not the type of train, which only represented less than 7% of the total expenditure for the proposed development.

Instead, the success was in the slim and light design for efficient stations, together with intelligent and expeditious installation and construction methods, he said.

The company, he added, had also been invited to participate in the pre-qualification for the Mumbai monorail project in India, which would close end of this month.

11 Jan 2008 11:14 AM

MRCB lands monorail job
by Joseph Chin
Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB)-led consortium, which includes Scomi Engineering Bhd and Penang Port Commission (PPC), is believed to have beaten three other bidders for the Penang monorail job, sources said.

They said MRCB was awarded the project, which analysts estimate would cost RM1.6 billion, for submitting the “most comprehensive” and “lowest priced” bid among the contenders. The consortium submitted its bid on Nov 14 last year.

The other three bidders for the monorail were MMC Bhd, the then Road Builder (M) Holdings Bhd, which has since been taken over by IJM Corporation Bhd, and the Melewar Group.

Analysts said a lot of synergy was provided by MRCB and its consortium partners, with PPC being the owner of the land on which the monorail would start from, Scomi the expertise to build the monorail coaches, and MRCB the builder of the infrastructure.

They said the Penang monorail project will be the platform for MRCB to showcase its capability when bidding for similar rail projects overseas including India. They said MRCB was also negotiating for a US$2 billion (RM6.5 billion) transport and housing development job in Saudi Arabia.

They added that the Penang Monorail project would also enable MRCB to position itself for more infrastructure projects in the various economic corridors in the country.

MRCB’s current order book is about RM2.2 billion. The RM1.6 billion monorail project and the proposed RM1.1 billion Penang Outer Ring Road project, if MRCB is able to secure, would increase its order book to RM4.9 billion.

Observers also expected MRCB, as one of the two local specialists in the installation of power transmission cables, to play a significant role in the installation of land-based transmission lines for the Bakun project.

According to a senior analyst, MRCB was one of the government-linked companies (GLCs) that had turned around “substantially” with a lot of upside expected from its property projects, infrastructure and power transmission businesses.

MRCB is also undertaking the development of the Butterworth transport hub, which is part of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

Last December, MRCB and Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputera Bhd proposed to jointly set up Penang Sentral Sdn Bhd for the Penang Sentral project that would include the development of an Integrated Transportation Hub. It will integrate Penang’s ferry, train, intercity and intra-city bus and taxi services and a monorail station.

CIMB Equities Research has estimated MRCB’s net profit for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2007 to reach RM61.20 million from RM36.8 million in FY06. For FY08, it estimates net profit to surge to RM98.5 million and for FY09, RM126.4 million.

I wonder why they mentioned MTrans? MTrans Transportation Systems Sdn. Bhd. does not exist anymore http://www.scomi.com.my/about/structure.asp

Malaysian newspapers really have to check their accuracy.
