BAKU | Full Moon Rising | 158m | 35 fl | App

FULL MOON RISING
http://www.skyscrapernews.com/news.php?ref=1357

Heerim Architects has attempted to reinvent the skyscraper beyond the traditional with two lunar inspired projects in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Korean firm has dreamed up Full Moon Bay and Caspian Plus that includes Crescent Place on neighbouring peninsulas in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku that look on to the Caspian Sea - the two projects on opposite extremes of the same bay acting as gateway markers.

Hotel Full Moon is essentially a disc with rounded edges and a hole in one of the top corners that appears radically different to the view depending on the angle it is seen from. The frontage thanks to the bulging centre makes it appear more like a glass death star whilst the side profile is more than a little gherkinesque.

Changing appearance depending on the view is reinforced by the cladding treatment the architect has selected. The front will have a glass diagrid whilst the back will be covered with hexagonal honeycombs.

This main building will be a 35 storey luxury hotel with 104,182 square metres of space for only 382 rooms, a relatively small amount of rooms given the sheer size of the internal space on offer. It will reach a maximum height of 158.68 metres.

The hotel is linked via a zoomorphically shaped podium that snakes curvaceously around the boundaries of the site to two residential apartment blocks entitled Palace of Wind 1 and 2.

it has potential, but only if they dont cut any corners. as a note the base thats rendered as a single smooth surface, i wonder how they plan on pulling that off. unless they have alien technology i cant see this turning out as sleek as the render.

I especially like the side view, but front is definately something odd, a potential landmark.

BAKU | Full Moon & Crescent Hotels | 35 fl | Pro

March 5, 2008
Death Star Lunar Hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan

Heerim Architects are planning to bring Star Wars chic to the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, defining the look with two uber-futuristic buildings to act as markers of the gateway of one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

Facing the Caspian Sea, the buildings are named Hotel Full Moon - a disc with rounded edges and a hole in one of the top corners - and Hotel Crescent, a curving arch similar to a crescent moon – and will mark out an area appropriately named Full Moon Bay. Designed to appear drastically different from different viewing angles – from one angle Death Star and from the other Gherkin - Hotel Full Moon will be a 150 meter-high, 35 story luxury hotel with 382 large rooms.

Hotel Crescent is designed as a counterpoint to Hotel Full Moon, with its column supports being disguised by its arched façade. The two hotels will be joined by three tall residential buildings and a fourth 43 floor office building standing 203 meters tall. If Full Moon Bay can just shake off the ‘Death Star’ vibe, it’s looking to be an amazing development.

The Crescent is possibly the most beautiful rendering I've ever seen.

Construction of Crescent is going: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...u#post98945807

But the project Full Moon Rising is on-hold for now, its place remains unchanged:

That's a pity ;(
It would have been a iconic building of Baku.
Although, the Crescent is also very nice and impressive!
