DAP: Build Chinese school in Sunny Garden
Kota Kinabalu: DAP MP Dr. Hiew King Cheu urged the Education Ministry to consider the request of the people here to build a Chinese-medium government school on seven-acre reserve land in Sunny Garden, instead. He said the land is located right in the middle of the city and it should rightfully serve the Chinese community, who account for almost 80 per cent of the population here. Furthermore, he said Chinese primary schools in the city are all over-capacity and not able to take in any more students. "There is an urgent need for at least three more such schools to cater to the anticipated increase of students in the future. In Kota Kinabalu, the Bumiputera students are studying in the Chinese school too with a percentage up to five percent. "Therefore, the SK Bandar is best converted to a government Chinese school to solve the problem," he said in a statement here Friday. Hiew hoped the State Education Department could study the case of the SK Bandar and consider converting it to a Chinese-medium government primary school in Kota Kinabalu. Towards this end he said since there are enough government primary schools in the city this proposed school be allocated to the Chinese who make up the bulk of the KK population to ease the congestion in the Chinese-type primary schools. |

'State-run private hospital needed'
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party's (SAPP) hostile reception to the Khidmat Private Hospital plan is understandable but to adopt a stand denying Sabahans the benefit of better healthcare services is unforgivable, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Supreme Council member, John Masabal. "What is SAPP's actual intention in denouncing the ability of the State and its agency in a noble plan. Does SAPP think only the SMC group is capable of constructing hospitals for subsequent disposal to the Government?" he asked. "We hope the political stand in this issue taken by SAPP has nothing to do with any interested party in SMC," said Masabal who is also PBS Moyog chief. He was responding to the statement by SAPP Information Chief, Chong Pit Fah who criticised his PBS counterpart, Johnny Mositun, for describing the Chief Minister's announcement to create a private hospital as the best Kaamatan gift to the people of Sabah. Chong questioned as to how the private hospital was the best Kaamatan gift when people still have to pay for the services and that the location of Wisma Khidmat was unsuitable. Masabal said Chong should not be narrow minded but to check his facts. "We are all behind what the PBS Information Chief outlined in his support of Datuk Seri Musa Aman's announcement of a private hospital to replace the void created by the sale of Sabah Medical Centre to the Federal Government recently," he said. According to him, PBS had stood firm to safeguard the interests of people in Sabah since its inception in 1985 and the party had weathered thick and thin. "Unlike SAPP, which took the simple path in pursuit of its political or personal objectives," he said. Masabal said SAPP was only benchmarking and repeating the stand taken and issues championed by PBS all this while, the only difference being that PBS is back in the Barisan Nasional (BN) while SAPP did the reverse. He also said Sabah DAP's support for Musa's plan was a genuine show of One Malaysia's spirit. "We call on SAPP members to emulate the spirit of DAP in Sabah to distinguish what is beneficial to the people of Sabah. "Let us have a Sabah State-run private hospital to fill the void created by the taking over of SMC by the Federal Government, the second time in a row over a few years," he said. Masabal said SMC should not be allowed to monopolise the hospital building industry. |

yes KK needs one due to lack of space in widening the current roads and the increasing number of cars on road nowadays
in my opinion, LRT could be build to cater the outer ring area of KK such as inanam, kolombong, bundusan, penampang, putatan, likas, luyang, bundusan, kepayan and so forth while the inner city centre could have Monorail going around from sembulan (sutera harbour) -> jesselton waterfront -> karamunsing -> sembulan both of this rail network could be link up in the middle like KL sentral nevertheless, the state gov should follow the steps of Rapid Penang which they have ordered 200 new Scania K-series buses. KK could start by purchasing 50 of it and slowly increase the order if the demand of it increases |

Bundusan traffic woes over mid-July
Penampang: Motorists using Jalan Bundusan (Duta) will have reason to rejoice soon as on-going upgrading work there is entering its final phase. State Public Works Department Director John Anthony (pic) told Daily Express that if everything goes well and weather-permitting, it should be all over by July 15. Currently about 89.12 per cent of the job had been completed and work on the uncompleted portion is progressing well. According to John, the completion of the RM29 million project had been delayed several times due to various factors, most notably in exercising care to prevent damage to utility pipes and cables. "The original completion date was Oct. 15, 2008. However, due to the obstruction problems caused by utility paraphernalia, the contract was extended another six months (April 14, 2009). The said project was awarded to the contractor on Oct. 2, 2006 and date of commencement of work was Oct. 16, 2006. There was delay due to rerouting the main water pipe, telecommunications cables and electrical wires and poles to the new site, which was not under the contractor's scope of work. John said the upgrading was aimed at easing traffic congestion along Jalan Bundusan, Jalan kolam and Jalan Penampang. It involved turning 3.65km of the current single carriageway to a three-lane carriageway and 0.32km of Jalan Kolam into a dual carriageway. The project also involves creating four roundabouts and improvement works at the KDCA intersection (traffic light junction). The two roundabouts are located near the Atlantis Restaurant and JPJ complex, while another two upgraded roundabouts at SGCC and Beverly Hills Commercial Industrial Park, respectively. John sympathised with the motorists and residents who had to bear the inconvenience and urged for their understanding, to drive carefully and observe the notices put up along the uncompleted sections of the road. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ finally the road is going to be completed jln bundunsan residents would be very happy. Let's see if the three lane carriageway solves the jam problem or not in the future |

Forecasting system will raise fish haul to RM11bil
Kota Kinabalu: Mimos Berhad and the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) signed a memorandum Saturday to develop a Fish Forecasting System (FFS) to help increase the country's fish production to a value of RM11billion by next year. FFS is a computerised system that generates information on potential fishing zones to enable fishermen using it go directly there without having to waste time and energy detecting fish with conservative ways. Once fully operational, the FFS is expected to benefit some 12,000 fishermen who are already using the system in Peninsular Malaysia. The MoA was signed and exchanged between Mimos President and CEO, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah, and Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, the LKIM Chairman, in a ceremony at Le Meridien. Under the agreement, Mimos will design and develop the FFS including the development of a fish location forecasting model, database portal development and an information dissemination system to distribute the forecast fish locations. LKIM will provide the content such as in-situ data, oceanography and acoustic data, fish catch and fish landing data. Abdul Wahab said the FFS, which is expected to be available beginning April 2010 will enable fishermen to save between 20 and 40 per cent of the total time spent on locating potential fishing zones which is currently based on fishermen's tacit knowledge and experience. "In addition, the FFS as Mimos' proof-of-concept for the fisheries industry will demonstrate that our technology platforms are able to cut across all verticals including traditional and non-traditional sectors," he said. The integration of remote sensing data provided by the Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency in the FSS will play a crucial part in determining the potential fishing zones. The FFS is expected to result in higher fishing productivity, enhance the livelihood of fishermen and achieve a sustainable development for the fisheries industry in Malaysia. The MoA follows the FFS project's kick-off in August 2007. The FFS is a joint research and development (R&D) project between Mimos, Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency, Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), LKIM and National Fishermen's Association of Malaysia (NEKMAT) for the development of an efficient system for fish forecasting for a sustainable fisheries industry. DOF's role is to collect oceanic and acoustic data obtained from the enumerator and studies carried out by the department. LKIM and NEKMAT will collect relevant data through appointment of enumerators and vessels and hand over the data to DOF for validation, the Remote Sensing Agency of Malaysia to receive and analyse satellite data for producing SST and Klorofil maps as well as develop and manage data base, and Mimos to produce models for potential fish catching zones and planned development system which involves model design, database and portal concept as well as information for dissemination. LKIM and NEKMAT will also manage the fish forecasting information dissemination system for fishermen either through the Internet system, short-messaging-system or facsimile. The fisheries industry is one of the main contributors of protein in Malaysia, currently involving 89,453 fishermen. The industry contributed 1.3million metric tonnes of fish in 2007. Abdul Rahim, meanwhile, said LKIM hopes the FFS would be expanded to East Malaysian states, particularly Sabah, under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (RMK-10). With the availability of such advanced tools, a fisheries institute or school will be set up in the State to prepare the fishermen here in terms of knowledge and skills in using such new and advanced fishing technology. FFS would be able to assist in the effort to ensure sustainable ways of fishing in the country, he said, adding LKIM has predicted fish production would increase to 1.4million metric tonnes between now and next year. |

Masterskill Sabah to place 10,000 students by 2010
KOTA KINABALU: Masterskill College in Sabah will be providing places for more students with the construction of adjoining blocks planned for additional 10,000 students by 2010. Operated by Masterskill Education Group Berhad (MEGB), which is the No.1 private health science education provider in Malaysia as well as in Asia Pacific region, the present college in Sabah can accommodate 3,000 students. Called Masterskill College Kota Kinabalu Metro Campus, it nestles in the township of Plaza Juta. Dato’ Edmund Santhara, the award winning Executive Director and CEO of Masterskill Education Group Berhad said the expansion was due to overwhelming demand from local Sabahans in response to the government’s call for more healthcare professionals. School leavers in Sabah could fill the shortage in nursing and critical healthcare services by taking up courses. Currently there are six programmes offered at the Sabah campus. “We are providing opportunities to Sabahans to venture into health science field, the 21st century career without the need for Sabahans to travel to peninsula to study nursing and health science courses,” he said. With its Masterskill University College of Health Sciences (MUCH) and Masterskill College Campuses nationwide, Masterskill is the top choice for students who are serious about pursuing a successful career in healthcare fields today. The strength of the college lays in a multi-faceted mission, emphasizing smooth transitions of academic knowledge, career development, partnership programs with the health industry, and strong community service offerings through affiliation with government and private hospitals. At Masterskill, it provides relevant, hands-on learning opportunities that lead to career entry and advancement. Currently about 35% percent of the students studying at Masterskill main campus in peninsula comes from East Malaysia. “Now it would be a great opportunity for students of Sabah and Sarawak to study here. We are together with the Sabah State Government in building Sabah towards becoming a healthcare hub for East Malaysia. With the establishment of such educational institutions here in Sabah, more education and employment opportunities created for the people and inadvertently improving the socio-economic status of people,” he added. Presently, the courses offered at Sabah campus are Nursing, Environmental Health, Pharmaceutical, Medical Laboratory, Physiotherapy and Healthcare. Five more courses including Diploma in Occupational Therapy and Forensic Science would soon be introduced at Sabah Campus. Masterskill is also working with an Australian institute to offer a three-year Diploma in Paramedic Science, the first of its kind in Asia at Sabah campus. “The programmes that we are offering are critical ones due to shortage of skilled people to fill the needs of hospitals and others,” Edmund said. Masterskill has claimed the leadership in nursing and health science education for its vast experience in nursing and heath science education, excellent facilities, worldwide recognized curriculum with high standards of teaching, well-sought-after graduates and its bold vision in bringing Malaysian education abroad. Students are currently exposed to technology driven learning experience with teaching and learning using information technology facilities using computer based training and learning methods. Classes are conducted in various scenarios from lectures, seminars, tutorials as well as workshops and presentations. Students are also exposed to external seminars and conferences related to their fields for industry and up-todate knowledge. Masterskill also draws a pool of highly experienced industrialists and academicians who came from many highly regarded institutions, locally and abroad, to contribute their expertise and knowledge in academic teaching and program research. Many of them serve as academic advisors, external examiners as well as visiting and adjunct lecturers in addition to the existing academic team. Masterskill College in Kota Kinabalu promotes an all-rounded educational for students. “Masterskill College Kota Kinabalu Metro Campus hopes to give each and every student a holistic education that not only provides a lucrative career but also career for a lifetime as well as be a catalyst for the State to continue developing its health service sector,” Edmund said. |

Objections to KK bus terminal and LRT project
Monday May 25, 2009 KOTA KINABALU: The Transport Ministry and Kota Kinabalu City Hall have agreed to refer the proposed southern bus terminal and Kota Kinabalu LRT projects to a special committee chaired by the state secretary to review their suitability. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the reason for the review was that the sites earmarked for the projects were in a security buffer zone near the airport. He said that Kota Kinabalu City Hall was also asked to submit a risk assessment report to the Transport Ministry and cooperate with Malaysia Airports Berhad to integrate the planned hubs with the Kota Kinabalu Airport masterplan. “This decision has helped resolve negotiations on the projects between Kota Kinabalu City Hall and the Transport Ministry that have dragged on,” he said on Friday. Abdul Rahim said that Kota Kinabalu City Hall planned the bus terminal on a 12ha site near the airport, but the Civil Aviation Department objected to it. It was feared that the bus terminal would cause traffic congestion on the main road leading to the city, he added. — Bernama |

New dam for Papar to supply water to KK until 2050
Monday May 25, 2009 By RUBEN SARIO KOTA KINABALU: A second dam will be built in Papar district near here to ensure sufficient water supply for this state capital and its vicinity until the year 2050. Outgoing state Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan said the dam in Kampung Kaiduan, 30km from here, was the centrepiece of the Kota Kinabalu water supply masterplan. A plan for the construction of a water treatment plant in Lok Kawi and the upgrading of two existing plants was approved by the state Cabinet on April 13, said Tan. He said the dam and the water treatment plant would cost RM2.8bil. They would supply an additional 1,200 million litres of water a day for the city, said Tan before handing over his ministerial portfolio to Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan on Wednesday . Tan said the dam with a capacity of 20 million litres and surface area of 12 sq km would be three times larger than the Kampung Babagon dam in Penampang district. “Water for the Kampung Kaiduan dam will come from catchment areas on the Crocker Range,” he said, adding that about 100 households would be relocated to make way for the project. Tan said that other components of the masterplan, including the upgrading of the Telibong and Papar water treatment plants at a cost of RM240mil, would boost the water supply by 120 million litres a day. |
