I hate the way 7 news is trying to whip up fear and hysteria. "Machines" coming down the street - as if they're some type of mysterious and deadly unknown object. How about calling them trams? Or if you want something less specific, vehicles.

As far as coverage goes it wasn't that bad. They could have found some deadbeat to have a carry-on about it but they didn't.

It won't be long now before they are running a full timetable under test - matter of weeks.

It will be easier for people to remember not to go on the tracks when there is a train through every 5-10 minutes.

Not to mention make people think twice about doing illegal u-turns at intersections. Well, we can hope at least...

Unlikely. People will still be clueless in that area. It happens a fair bit in Melbourne, so it probably would happen in Gold Coast as well. But that is really just as part of the normal public transport process. Can't really protect fully against the dumbest people on the road.

It will take some adjusting for Gold Coast drivers and surely a fair number of them will do it unintentionally when it opens. Others will flout the rules.

As for the seven news report calling them "machines", at least the people saw them as friendly going by the phones and cameras being pointed at it.

Drove along the track today and it was great to see the tram in Surfers Paradise. People driving south on the GC Highway are now able to turn left on to Surfers Paradise Boulevard and follow the tram line. One block between Clifford street and Hamilton street (the Q1 block) was shut today but I'm sure that is just temporary. Does anyone know if the footpath is going to be widened along Surfers Paradise Boulevard? I saw plenty of gated areas and very small footpaths.

I also drove through Broadbeach along the tram line and nearly everything between the area that the line diverts back on to the GC Highway up until just before the Convention Centre looks complete. The area around the Convention Centre looks like it is receiving significant upgrades on footpaths. The new footpaths (on the tram line and on the east side) appeared to be coloured gold?

Looking forward to the tram finally making its way to Broadbeach.

^ Not quite, the station is on the other side of the next intersection in the distance.

The stretch in the foreground has a turnout installed.

One thing I am pleased about is the stations seem to have their number of go card readers based on likely patronage levels. The Griffith Uni platforms have plenty evenly spaced along the platform whereas some of the other stops like Main Beach only seem to have about 2-3 per side closer to the end of the platform.
