Another piece of superb infrastructure that's just gone up on the Coast. Good to see ratepayer money well spent.

I can't for the life of me figure out where that is, but hey, I did say we take the cake for Christmas ornaments (or lack thereof)

I love those ornaments. Growing up with them was a way of reinforcing how tacky my hometown is, and how we shouldn't be in a rush to take it that seriously.

If you want a piss-weak Christmas pantomime and shop window display you only have to go up the M1 to Brisbane, which is in a huge rush to be taken seriously (and generally fails).

There is so much pressure to make Christmas ornaments so non-offensive to those who want to have Christmas but are offended at any reference to the reason for it, that we end up with rather anemic decorations that don't mean anything and fail to satisfy.

Love 'em! Nihilistic, yet awesomely craptacular.

They must bump up the seasonal suicide rate immensely.

If they hung glitter-spattered stuffed kangaroo scrotums from lightpoles they couldn't do better.

Any more?

So yeah, it's pretty obvious they don't try very hard... I just don't know why they bother.

sorry to have dragged this thread off topic

THE light rail project will be the biggest waste of money in the history of the State Government.

There, I said what most people are already thinking.

Those in treasury and GoldLinQ would be better off flying to the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean and tipping $1 billion into the water.

It will be as useful to the fish in the sea as it will be to residents of the Gold Coast.

Unless you live on the beach, the rail is useless for you.

It's only real worth will be as a party bus ferrying the drunks between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach each night.

There will need to be a full-time onboard cleaner employed simply to clean up the vomit from those who have had too much to drink.

Unless you live in Broadbeach and work at Griffith University or somewhere in Surfers, the light rail is no good to you.

Those who live in Burleigh and work at Robina, well that's money well spent for them isn't it?

It won't even link up with the Commonwealth Games stadium.

Patrons will be able to sing "I'm on the road to nowhere" as they travel on board the eight-figure contraption.

When you look at it, the light rail really is just an expensive version of the casino's monorail.

It looks pretty, tourists think it's cool, but it really doesn't do much.

That $1 billion would have been better spent improving roads, adding more lanes or opening toll roads in the city for the first time.

Those behind the light rail are yet to provide irrefutable evidence that people will use it.

Gold Coasters don't use public transport. Our bus system is poor for a reason. People don't like travelling on it.

In Brisbane, people travel to work on public transport by the dozens; not so on the Gold Coast.

That's largely because a huge section of the Brisbane workforce are based in the CBD.

Our problem is we don't have a CBD. Southport thinks its the business district, Robina wants to be the business district and then there is Broadbeach and Surfers, which are the busiest hubs.

We're too spread out.

Oh, and there's Coolangatta. People north of Broadbeach prefer to pretend that area doesn't exist.

There's a few LNP MPs on the Gold Coast who privately think it's a waste of money too, but the deal was signed before they came into office so they have to lump it.

Besides, it's not good for your electoral prospects to knock back $1 billion in public/private funding.

There's not even a tram, monorail, carriage or whatever they are on the road yet and the light rail has already left a legacy.

Cruise through Surfers Paradise where the centre of the road has been dug up and you'll find holes.

Not just the mess that's been made on the road, but holes that have been left in people's lives.

Businesses have been forced to close because the construction of the light rail has prevented customers from having easy access to the premises.

It is sad to see as you drive by how many have closed down.

That of course is offset by construction jobs created but there'll always be construction.

This is a project that is going to leave the city with a big shiny new toy that nobody really wants.

There simply isn't the money in government or private coffers to have a proper light rail which goes throughout the city.

In China you can travel from town to town on their rail network. That's because China is a powerhouse.

Our system won't get you from suburb to suburb.

People like me can whinge all day -- it's too late, the project is going ahead.

The challenge now is to make the project profitable.

Until that's done the light rail is no better than the monorail.

And at least that travels in the air ... which is kind of fun.

How some of these opinion pieces manage to see the light of day I will never know.

Obvious straw clutch is obvious. First they talk about how it's too expensive, then how it doesn't go to Robina... well that'll cost another $2b for what? All 26,000 people who live on a possible Robina route vs 80,000 in Broadbeach/Surfers/Southport... hmm

There's just so much wrong with that piece...

I'm sure the ridiculous Meers article warmed the pacemaker-perked hearts of the Stop Light Rail nannas. Their website is looking very forlorn.

The system is poor because people don't use it. Yes, Daniel Meers, that's the way round it goes.

Looks like Meers is giving Alan Jones a run for his money in the opinionated stupidity stakes.

It's not that one can't have a differing opinion about things, but a diatribe without any evidence, sources, or consideration of an opposing view for balance isn't journalism, it's on the same level as some ranting drunk at the pub.

Jesus what a moronic opinion. Such great journalism Gold Coast Bulletin! In 5 years from now they will not know how they survived without the light rail.

Just wait. He'll be writing opinion on how the trams are too overcrowded or late after they start running.

Opinion piece = uninformed ranting at the pub, only printed!

I swear, with the exception of Shannon Willoughby, the GC Bulletin pretty well doesn't have a half decent reporter with them! I get better reporting from the free local Quest rag I get around here!

That is one of the worst articles I've ever read, even for an opinion piece. It literally sounded like he was half drunk and had never been to the Gold Coast before. They say the media is a reflection of society and this clearly indicates we're all screwed.
