Thats the problem, in the article he was never quoted as saying ligh-trail is the reason business is down. He is only quoted as saying some businesses have experienced "downturns of 30 per cent or greater". You jumped to conclusion and attacked him over that, for all we know he could be 100% behind the ligh-trail construction, but the journalist only quoted 7 words.

They don't need to, every time, refer back to or insinuate light rail as the main cause of their problems. It's obvious that is what they think the problem is, and to an extent it is, however a successful business will survive - as many are. All in all, we have lost a dingy newsagent, a cafe, a pawnbroker, and a crap jeweller. Most of which have been snapped up by Koreans and turned into restaurants of some sort.

So yes, I may have jumped to conclusions, but it's the 50th article whinging about the same thing...

I find it interesting thinking about how shopping centres in a way are just covered malls, yet they can be quite successful in the middle of no where. It makes sense that accessibility is something that can make or break a street mall concept, which is no different to shopping centres in the end. If car access is really a big issue, then the council should encourage developments around the mall to include public multistory carparks that are within a reasonable walking distance to the street mall. This will be much more efficient than one parking space per shop front! That said, this light rail is going to provide quite a bit of pedestrian traffic for the businesses to tap into with extra pathway space being a big bonus for them.

You'd be surprised.

The Gold Coast is a much less insular place generally.

Carnage

I wouldn't be thrilled about this either if I was a local.

I am thrilled about it and am a local.

You can't ride trees to work, anymore than you can ride a budget surplus or AAA+ credit rating.

There's no shortage of greenery on the Gold Coast and nothing there was ecologically significant. There's a servo right next door!

I count 6 trees cut down? And hundreds still standing around it? Do you really expect them to weave light rail between trees?

Anyone who complains about the loss of that park is welcome to demolish their own dwelling and reinstate the trees that were felled to build it.

^ Not to mention the environmental advantage to shifting over to electric traction and high-capacity PT (not the same thing obviously but tend to be linked). Making a big dent in mode share will do a lot more for the city's credentials than preserving a park completely isolated from anything useful by the road network and crap pedestrian access. There's a perfectly good 42km beachfront linear park not far away, plus the Cascade Gardens just up the road.

I still don't know how pedestrian access to Pac Fair is going to work because the footpath between the interchange and Pac Fair looks like terra incognita on the project maps. Maybe they'll ask AMP for some money to do it up.

The project team has been busy with the move into Surfers so it's been a while since I have had a pow-wow with them - must raise this next time.

I also love how the busiest precincts in the city are apparently "nowhere" to these boofheads.

.
It really needs to be a new footbridge over the "moat" into that entrance downstairs beneath the big food court (the one you currently need to use the winding footpath along the water from the Hooker Blvd road bridge)

I'm guessing it's a stalemate over who's going to pay for it.

Traders consider light rail class action bid

TRADERS crippled by the billion-dollar light rail construction are considering taking legal action against the State Government.

Southport-based law firm Evans Lawyers has called on business owners and traders who have been financially affected by the project to join a proposed class action bid for compensation.

CEO Troy Manhire said many Southport businesses had been "devastated" during the light rail's construction and a class action against the State Government, the Gold Coast City Council and consortium GoldLinQ was "worth exploring".

"Our firm is based in the heart of Southport and we have been very disturbed by the number of businesses that have closed or been affected by this construction," Mr Manhire said.

"We think what is going on, in good conscience, is simply not right." Mr Manhire said "a number" of Southport traders had committed to the legal action and he expected more would come forward.

"We will explore whether these retailers have a course of action -- if they do, we will go for it," he said.

"If they do not, at least they will know once and for all."

One trader who has joined the action and who asked not to be named, said he felt he had "no other choice".

"We are barely surviving," he said.

"I don't even know if we will be able to hold out until (the project) is finished.

"It has been tough.

"We're just hanging in and so many people have their backs to the wall."

The supreme irony is that he failed to plan ahead, unlike every one of his patrons...

If the Gold Coast is that upset about light rail they could just dig it up and give it to Brisbane, I'm sure we would appreciate it a lot more.
