Old Town and Fruit Market 1970

I'm not sure if this is before or after the war as this part of Hull suffered surprisingly little damage

I'm hoping it was pre-war as a huge swathe was wiped away in the 70s for a new dual carriageway

Finally an aerial photo showing bomb damage immediately after the war

nice old pics crusty, Glasgow's grid plan looks even better in ye olde black & white!

don't forget liverpool too

In 1841, when the average population density for England and Wales was 275 per square mile.
The density in Little Ireland was calculated to be equivalent to 657,963 per square mile.
That is the same as putting one and a half times the entire 2002 population of Liverpool into one square mile.

Looks like three ships, one deep sea, two coasters and the rest are barges.

That dock was filled in in the 30s to form Queens Gardens (that park in the middle of the 2007 photo). The other Dock, Princes Dock, which joined on to it had a shopping centre built over it in the late 80s.

ah yeah i see now. Shame that they've been filled in though, even for a nice garden.

Excellent pics! I never understood why there was such a rush to fill in all the docks, London seems to have retained a lot

Glasgow, 1950something. Queens Docks to the left is now the SECC, Princes Docks to the right is now Pacific Quay (Science Centre, BBC etc)

The council infamously tried to completely fill in Bristol's floating harbour (I think one of the ideas was to then turn it into a dual carriageway) *shudders*

excellent finds. Looking at the Bath one now there are some obvious clues, but I wouldn't have picked up on them!

Oh yeah, I see what you mean! Still retained a comparatively large amount though. I suppose that could go some way to explaining why docks in other cities were so readily, even hurriedly, filled in. Stunning map btw! You should post it on the Lost London thread (if you haven't already)
