I'm starting to get concerned that Houston is about to reach overbuilding mode considering there's no sign of upward movement in oil prices. It's not there yet due to property demand outstripping supply, but on the office side in particular there's been little preleasing for spec projects, particularly downtown...could result in a glut around 2017.

Don't worry oil will be 200$ a barrel soon enough

LOL

with cars going on to 50mpg (even some electric going upwards to 70miles per charge) by the next 2 years I really doubt its gonna rise past 100 dollars a barrel again. And just imagine the future...by 2030 cars could average 70-100 mpg/200 miles per charge

At the Texas Medical Center, there's nowhere to go but up.

The board of Texas Children's Hospital has "enthusiastically approved" a $506 million expansion on the medical center campus that includes construction of a 19-story tower on top of the existing building base next to Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, officials announced Tuesday.

The project will add 640,000 square feet and 130 beds and make the tower the new home to Texas Children's Heart Center.

The addition, slated to be completed in 2018, is the latest development supported through the hospital's $475 million Promise campaign, a fundraising effort to "ensure the future of Texas Children's as a lead in pediatric and women's health," a release from the board states.

The new tower focuses on additional space for pediatric and cardiovascular intensive care, as well as new operating rooms. After the tower is completed, the Emergency Center and other areas in the hospital's West Tower will be renovated.

Buoyed by some of the largest donations in the city's history, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will unveil a $450 million project today that envisions its campus as the cultural heart of the city.

The project, by Steven Holl Architects, is the most exciting in the institution's 90-year history, board chairman Richard Kinder said. The plan, named the Fayez S. Sarofim Campus, is so transformational that in five years Houstonians might not recognize the 1000 block of Bissonnet.

It has garnered hefty donations, with lead gifts of $70 million by Sarofim; $50 million by Kinder and his wife, Nancy; and $10 million each from eight other donors.

Holl, who has offices in New York and Beijing, has re-imagined the campus' north side as a pedestrian-friendly cultural hub with a lively landscape, two distinctive new buildings, ample underground parking and smooth circulation patterns for vehicles and people.

Even with the plunge in oil prices and the escalation of in close-in apartment construction, the inner-city is still a smart play, said Clay Hicks, Dinerstein’s president of apartment management.

“People really want to live where they work and play and eat, and I don’t think that’s going to change,” said Hicks, who recently joined the company after 8 years at Greystar.
