In the Netherlands there are additional road signs to warn trucks with lowboy trailers not to use crossings with steep approaches to prevent them from getting stuck on the tracks. Does anything similar exist in the US, because this looks like a spot that could use them?

This sign is common on approach to crossings with a low clearance problem...

That wig wag looks incredibly unsafe...

Busy railway crossing near Almelo. 10 trains passing in 15 minutes means the crossing is closed for almost 10 minutes.

Dangerous Stamford railroad crossing gets gates
Alex Gecan
Updated 2:57 pm, Thursday, May 21, 2015

STAMFORD -- City and state officials prayed for an end to car versus train accidents Thursday as they unveiled a new safety gate at one of the Metro-North New Haven Line's most dangerous rail crossings.

The state Department of Transportation, the city and the Riverbend Center office park -- where The Advocate leases office space -- split the $1.27 million cost of installing the new gate arms and new signals at the crossing. The tracks run across one of three entrances to Hope Street office park in Springdale. The other two other crossings in the office park have had gates for some years.

It's the single track New Canaan Branch of the New Haven Main Line. The newspaper could have been more specific. Seems like an overdue improvement- the line has approx. 1tph in each direction- not heavy by any means, but this is not some underutilized freight only line, but one that carries passengers.

I guess I read over that , but down the road they like to have 2TPH bi direction travel. This crossing is used by trucks , but there is a low underpass nearby.

Interesting level crossing from Taiwan (the last one that was in Taipei), featuring displays that indicate incoming train tracks and directions, and using lowered gates rather than booms.

I wonder why they use the lowering fence instead boom gates?

It comes down to poor design of the crossing. The stopping position is on the far side of the tracks and has only room for 2 cars at most. Naturally this will result in people stopping on the tracks. Luckily it seems like the traffic light is synchronised with the railroad crossing, but it is still a sub par solution. Looking at the crossing, I would close of Carolan Avenue and move the stopping position to the near side of the tracks. That would solve the problem.

One picture of the curious railway crossing in Gurtnellen. This is one of the 3 remaining level crossings on the Gotthardbahn between Basel and Chiasso. It carries a footpath that leads to a couple of old agricultural buildings in a private property, and although there is basically no pedestrian traffic, it has recently been equipped with conventional barriers, lights and bells. For decades there have been just the wooden sleepers across the tracks and the obligation to train drivers to whistle when passing there. As this was not in line with the new strict law about level crossings, this one had to be equipped as such.

The 3 level crossings on the Gotthardbahn are these:

Basel, closed to road traffic and supplemented by a foot bridge: https://map.geo.admin.ch/?X=259120.2...opo.swissimage

Gurtnellen, see above: https://map.geo.admin.ch/?X=177259.0...opo.swissimage (near the house to the north)

Lugano, on a minor one-way local road: https://map.geo.admin.ch/?X=95709.50...opo.swissimage

There is also a twin level crossing on the branches to Luino (below) and Locarno (above), however the junction is before Lugano, thus freight trains in transit never pass through all 4 of them: https://map.geo.admin.ch/?X=112567.2...opo.swissimage
