It would be difficult to rebuild the rest of the jewish district because there is now a giant commie block district on it called Muranow. This area was literally like 1/3 of the city too.
De Snor, the A2 motorway will get to Warsaw by 2007, by then a beltway will be constructed as part of this. Its sort of a problem because none of the boroughs want it going through their territory. |

I think the getto area should'nt be reconstructed . I guess that the Jewish Museum is an appropiate method to bring Jewish to Warsaw. But of course the reconstruction of Prozna is a fantastic idea.

Reconsturction of larger part of former Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw is simply impossible- completely new district, which is called Muranow was built there after the War.
But I cross my fingers for revitalization of "Prozna" street which goes to Grzybowski square (historic squre- there are also many historic buildings connected with Jewish culture left), there is Jewish theatre there and very nearby the only remaining synagogue of Warsaw Ghetto- "Nozyk" synagogue. All this part of the city needs revitialization, but it can become big turist attraction in the near future! Furthermore near the monument of Heroes of Warsaw Ghetto there will be constructed very modern Musem of Polish Jews- inside the Museum there are plans to recreate whole street whith prewar atmosphere of Jewish quarter in Warsaw. Anyway there are some Warsaw Ghetto traces that are left and if You asking about Jewish turists- lots of them are coming to Warsaw already. Monument at Umschlagplatz on Stawki Street Memorial to Heroes of Warsaw Ghetto remaining section of Warsaw Ghetto wall Nozyk Synagogue at # 6 Twarda Street in Warsaw Yiddish Theater to the left with Catholic Church in background The Jewish Cemetery Some article: JEWISH WARSAW In the Ghetto By Magda Kuszewska 10 April 2003 April 19 marks the 60th anniversary of the uprising in the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw. The four-hour tour Through Jewish Warsaw traces the most significant and tragic places of the Holocaust. "We're moving about mainly in the area of the large ghetto," explains Jerzy Maleńczyk, director of the Our Roots Jewish Information&Tourist Bureau at the beginning of the tour. It is here, in the area of Grzybowski Square and part of Muranów district, that the most important ghetto landmarks were situated. Before the war, the area was occupied by houses, shops, markets, hospitals and cultural centers belonging to the Jewish commune. 60 Złota St.-A great wall surrounding the ghetto during World War II was situated along the section of Złota and Sienna streets. In order to see the preserved fragments of the wall one has to walk into the yard. "Mieczysław Jędrzak, who still lives here, was the first person to commemorate this place," explains Maleńczyk. Jędrzak marked the line of the wall with red bricks embedded in the ground. It was only years later that a plaque was put up. A Jewish children's hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Warsaw, built in the early 18th century, was situated at 60 Sienna St. The surrounding buildings were built nearly 100 years ago and later became part of the ghetto; they have been preserved in their original condition. The corner of Waliców and Pereca streets-Near the ONZ Circle, down Prosta and along Żelazna streets. "A small factory belonging to the ghetto area was situated here," says Maleńczyk. "However, the entrance to the factory was on the other side, since Poles worked there." A wall with visible traces of bullets from the period of the Jewish uprising of 1943 has been preserved. "So we have a double monument. The damaged wall is more telling than a plaque," says Maleńczyk. The damaged buildings, witness to the uprising, are still inhabited. Chłodna Street-Down Waliców St., crossing Krochmalna St. Entrances to the ghetto were situated here. "Chłodna divided the ghetto into two parts," says Maleńczyk. "A large wall was built along it, over which there was a bridge." The street could not be included in the ghetto for practical reasons-it was located on the main transport route. At 20 Chłodna St. is a building where Adam Czerniakow, head of the Judenrat administrative unit in the ghetto, used to live. He committed suicide as a sign of protest against the first transports of people to Treblinka. The paving stones and the streetcar rails come from the times of World War II. Mirowski Square is the place where markets were situated in which residents traded before the war. The Mirowska Market Hall, whose shape has actually been changed, is still situated there. The Jewish cemetery on Gęsia Street-Approaching the cemetery driving down Karolkowa St. along Gibalskiego St. "It's a miracle that the cemetery has survived," says Maleńczyk. "Nobody knows why the Nazis didn't destroy it. About 200,000 graves have been preserved-an extraordinary number." Not only Jews from Warsaw rest in the cemetery. It also includes the graves of famous Jews such as Czerniakow, Perec, Zamenhoff and numerous artists, doctors, professors, actors, poets and writers. A separate part of the cemetery incorporates the graves of orthodox Jews, rabbis and zaddikim. Zamenhoffa and Anielewicza streets-In the early 1980s the Memory Lane was created. Walking down the 300-meter-long section of Anielewicza St., one can see 16 commemorative stones devoted to the heroes of the Jewish uprising battles. Several steps further is a beautiful monument created by Natan Rappaport: Memorial of the Ghetto Heroes from 1948. It commemorates the uprising. The central part of the ghetto was situated here; the stones lead towards the Umschlagplatz. The Umschlagplatz, 5/7 Stawki St.-A plaque stating that over 300,000 Jews died in this place, either executed or taken to death camps, has been placed on a large wall. As it would be impossible to place all the names of the thousands of victims of the Holocaust here, a symbolic set of 350 Jewish names have been written on the wall. Nearby, at 6/8 Stawki St., a Jewish ghetto hospital was situated. The small ghetto-Heading back down Jana Pawła II and Solidarności avenues towards Bankowy Square, the Jewish Historical Institute is situated at 3/5 Tłomackie St. The institute presents photographic exhibitions and video projections about the Holocaust. There is also a small museum of religious structures where a life-size house of prayer can be seen. The Great Synagogue used to be situated near the institute-it was blown up May 16, 1943, the day after the ghetto was destroyed. The Silver Tower, one of Warsaw's office buildings, was built where the synagogue was once situated. Grzybowski Sq.-"The most significant Jewish buildings of the present times are situated here," says Maleńczyk. Several centuries ago the square was a marketplace. In the 19th century the construction of buildings began; they were later damaged during the war and renovated over a dozen years ago. The famous Nożyk Synagogue (6 Twarda St.) and the Jewish Theater are situated here. Organizations such as the Ronald Lauder Foundation, the Association of Children of the Holocaust in Poland, the Polish Union of Jewish Students, the American-Polish Foundation for the Promotion of Polish-Jewish Culture and the editorial office of Midrasz magazine are also situated nearby. This is the area where the cultural, educational and artistic life of Jewish Warsaw is concentrated. |

There is a security guard guarding the buildings on one side of the street. Last summer I asked him what was up with the buildings. He said theres absolutely nothing currently going on, they just got him to watch it.

Zloty Taras will become sunonimous with Warsaw once its built.
I have only two questions: 1) are there any plans now or in the future to repair the ugly train station ( I think its a train station, but Im not sure) or build a new one? 2) Is there any plan to get rid of the parking lot in the downtown area and put a building there? The parking lot is an eye sore right in the centre of downtown. |
