Amazing photos! I wish the weather was like that when I was there in August (it was very grey and rained a lot!) The city center is surprisingly compact and very walkable.

What a beautiful city! And the pictures are amazing! By the way, quite interesting to see a Dane introducing the Swedish capital.

Congrats, Freki!

I've always noticed from Stockholm threads that it seems that most of the buildings there are yellow or orange. Interesting.

What makes Stockholm beautiful as far as I can see is the detail in alot of the architecture, the pastel colours and quite frankly the heavily influenced Southern European/classic/Italianate-style, of course with a Nordic vernacular, such as the rounded corners and in many cases the restrained facades etc. Of course some of the backstreets and what looks like residential buildings are plain, which are also usually plainer throughout Europe, including in the south.

All these pictures remind me and are obviously influenced by classic, especially Italian renaissance architecture.

This building would fit in comfortably on the Cote Azur

so would these

northern influences (dormers etc) to an essentially Italianate street curtain.

this street reminds me of a pedestrianized street in Turin

and this of a theatre in Trieste Italy

Absolute renaissance influences here

and here

plain buildings here yes, yet amongst Italian style gardens

So what makes Stockholm beautiful, along with Copenhagen, Paris, Vienna, St Petersburg and most European cities is their classical/renaissance/Italianate style architecture. Take these streetscapes away from Stockholm and yes it is quite plain and severe.
