Went past City Inn/Mint Hotel here in Manchester at Piccadilly this afternoon and only a subtle alteration with the re branding here. Just above the revolving doors it has the Mint Hotel. Nowhere else on the building as yet is displaying it.

Not long ago, a planning application was submitted (by Hilton??) for a hotel by the flyover on South Accommodation Road. I think it got quite a mauling at planning committee but the developers are back with revised proposals (see here for details).

A new Holiday Inn hotel is proposed for Gildersome. http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.u...eds.6675983.jp

Calls for meeting on Leeds hotel proposal

Published Date: 31 December 2010
Residents concerned at plans to build a new hotel complex in Leeds are calling for a public meeting to be held.
Developers want to create a 3,500 sq metre, 115-bedroom Holiday Inn Hotel at Gildersome with up to four storeys, landscaping and car parking, along with a family restaurant and pub on the busy Wakefield Road.

* Click here to sign up to free news and sport email alerts from your YEP.

The new plans also include warehouse space.

However, resident Kathryn Rose, who lives near the site on Wakefield Road, said there were clear concerns about the proposals and claimed a public meeting was needed.

* Click here to follow the YEP on Twitter.

She said: "The possibility of job creation could also be discussed at the meeting and once all have had their views heard, it would be far easier for everyone concerned to make a balanced decision.

"The people of Gildersome want answers and so I call on the council to give them the opportunity to get these answers."

The restaurant and pub would be managed by Mitchells and Butlers, who already operate other local pubs such as the Toby Carvery in Bruntcliffe and the Harvester White Rose on Wide Lane.

The firm says the proposed development would also create 200 jobs.
Another letter of objection has been received from a Bruntcliffe Road resident, who says there are already plenty of hotels in the area.

The planning proposal says there is both a need for additional tourist accommodation and that the hotel could host over 11,330 visitors per year, which could lead to up to £1.34m generated in the area.

On the issue of transport, the report says the "traffic association" can be adequately accommodated within the surrounding highway network and access arrangements meet current highways standards.

In conclusion, it says that the proposed hotel development will have a "positive impact on the site and will support a permitted business park scheme".
Wonder where abouts on Wakefield Road this hotel will be sited (im guessing it will be in close proximity to the Turnberry Park Business Park and Gildersome Ambulance Station?). It certainly is looking like there is a cluster of hotels around that neck of the woods with the Toby Carvery / Innkeepers Lodge (to be rebranded as a Travelodge) by the crossroads with Bruntcliffe Lane and the Premier Inn / Brewers Fayre on Bradford Road at the Old Brickworks presumably serving the motorways and nearby industrial and retail sites.

Yorkshire hotel named 'Britain's best'
19th January 2011

By Ian Briggs
Deputy Editor, Yorkshire

RUDDING Park has been named 'Britain's Best Hotel' for the second year running in an awards competition dubbed the "Oscars of the hotel world".

The Yorkshire venue near Harrogate was awarded the accolade in travel website TripAdvisor's ninth annual Travellers'Choice Hotel awards.

Rudding Park has been lauded for its "impeccable service" and "wonderful setting" by TripAdvisor travellers.

Peter Banks, managing director of Rudding Park, said: "We are thrilled to receive the TripAdvisor Award for Best Hotel in the UK for the second year running, proving that an independent Yorkshire hotel can match and beat the most famous names in British hospitality."

The awards recognise the best hotels around the world across categories including best budget, best luxury, best B&B and best service.

TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice awards are based on the experiences of millions of travellers from around the world.

The second best hotel in Britain this year in the awards was The Old Rectory in Exmoor, Devon and third place went to Boskerris Hotel in St Ives, Cornwall.

From the businesdesk.com 5/5/11 :

MINT Hotel Leeds has been named as the third best for business travel by discount hotels specialist LateRooms.com.

The list is based on a combination of reviews submitted by business customers online and the hotels that secure the most corporate bookings.

Andrew Pumphrey, LateRooms.com's managing director, said: “Personal service is essential for business travellers, whether that’s being made to feel welcome after a long day on the road, or those extra touches to ease the stress of a hectic schedule.

"The hotels on our Best For Business Travel list are a great example of properties that go the extra mile to cater for corporate clients.”

Madingley Hall in Cambridge topped the list and Hotel Royal Ramblas in Barcelona came second.

The City Inn Leeds was rebranded as Mint Hotel Leeds last year in advance of the hotel group opening two new hotels in London and Amsterdam.

Mint Hotel Leeds boasts the SkyLounge concept, which features rooftop terraces, private dining and meeting rooms and an exclusive destination bar.

Mint Hotel has properties in Bristol, Glasgow, Birmingham, Westminster, Manchester and Leeds.

There was a crane outside Hepworth House today lifting something onto the roof and loads of work men around the site and in and out of the building. Thought its probably to do with the Premier Inn, maybe we're about to see this project start. Can only be good things.

My mate who works in the Mint Manchester says they are being taken over by Hilton. They're not happy about it either.

I wonder if it'd be another type in their range, or if it'll become fully absorbed as a normal Hilton? I expect it could see the closure of Hilton Leeds City if so... although clearly there's demand for both Hilton and Mint in Leeds now.

Can't see one of the two Hiltons in Leeds close although it would be nice if it could perhaps mean an extensive reclad of the Hilton on Neville Street. Surely it would be a case of rebranding one or both under one of a number of brands Hilton owns (such as say Doubletree) or possibly keeping Mint Hotels as another distinctive brand perhaps as one more upmarket than the core Hilton Hotels brand? http://www.businessweek.com/ap/finan.../D9PPMTN80.htm

Also I wonder if there is ever going to be any plans to do anything with the equally unattractive Bradford Hilton?

I work at the Skylounge at the Mint Hotel Leeds and we've been told that the Hilton will be staying open and that one the new names been thrown around is, 'Mint by Hilton'. Also there are going to be no changes made to the hotels until after the Christmas period is over. Although the Hotel Manager is already in the process of being replaced. Also alot of our admin and reservation staff are going to be made redundant and presumably our Housekeeping staff will be replaced by Hiltons own as they are currently outsourced by an external company.

There's a good chance they will be TUPE* transferred to the new company and remain in role.

Why do we not have a Wetherspoons Hotel in Leeds? It seems to me that the Square on the Lane on Boar Lane would be ideal location for such a venture. Another good location for Wetherspoons in general IMHO.

If you mean spoons pubs we have several

Wetherspoons-train station
Beckett's Bank-Park Row
Hedley Verity-Woodhouse St
Cuthbert Broderick-Millenium Square
Stick or Twist-Wade Lane

besides, spoons don't do accommodation, do they?

Yes, they do have hotels. And I don't know why not in Leeds... but if they did, I'd rather it was on the fringe of the City than on say Boar Lane. They'd do well off the arena if they could find a site near there- maybe just on the other side of the IRR. They seem to be going for a country/market town type image though so maybe their hotel brand doesn't fit Leeds well.

Spoons hotels tend to be found more in market town type places, don't they?

According to LNGCats and some of his sidekicks, they should fit right in in Leeds then!

I certainly wouldn't class the centre of Birmingham as a market town type place. I have stayed there before and found the upstairs hotel very handy after a good night on the lash. Good breakfast as well.
