Welcome to Asuncion City......

Welcome to Asuncion

Thanks for sharing. We hardly hear about Asunción here on SSC or Paraguay in general in the news, etc. South America is so big that the bigger or more dominant countries seem to steal all the spot light (i.e. Columbia, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru, and BIG BRAZIL)

well, i dont think that Asuncion is the poorest capital in South America, its certainly one of the less known cities in the area, but ive seen more poverty in other cities in the continent.. i believe that most of the cities in South America have their grade of poverty.

Asuncion is a small city comparing to other capitals in the continent (600.000 habs. in the Capital District and aprox. 2.000.000 habs in the Metropolitan Area called "Gran Asuncion") its a growing city with a lot to do, needs to improve the public transportation, needs more highways and ramps, and a better manteinance.

The "golden" age of Asuncion was in the late XIX century, when the country was "rich" (well, we said rich because we didnt have external debts, we had steel industries, etc..) in those days european architects designed most of the public buildings, that remains nowadays...

That is why asuncion has a slightly european style, only stopped because of the devastating War of the Triple Alliance, and later the Chaco War.

Other cities in southern south america grew faster in those days, while asuncion was static. In the present days (maybe five years ago) Asuncion began to grow in population and in the construction bussines as well (24 % in the first semester of this year)

You are all welcome to see more of Asuncion and Paraguay in the paraguayan forums!

Thank you for the pictures. I had no idea Asunción was that big or that lovely. The mixture of apartments, trees and old colonial buildings is very nice.
