There are numerous styles of mosque around the world, Turkish, Arabian, Indian, Malaysian all have different styles but it's probably like church architecture where architects like to use traditional styles so that they are recognisable rather than copying local architecture.

This church in Bangalore, India for example uses the same style as European churches despite being in a part of the world where that architecture is not used for other buildings.

Last time I went to Tarbes, an anonymous town in SW France, a mosque was being built. I cannot say that it's ugly ; prettier than a McDonald's for example. We cannot make Muslims build Mosques that would integrate well when most architects don't follow that example.

Yet, I've always found ecclectism a bit vain.

I prefer scientology churches over any mosques.

Of course, that's the name of the film. The daughter comes out with her grandfather from that entrance and the French guy meets them across the road.

Neo-Mauresque buildings are part of European architecture. I've never liked that much that style (too late-XIXth century) but it's all but shocking here. Glass and steel buildings in the center of a XIXth century centre-town are more shocking to my eyes.

Example of a Neo-Mauresque building in a spa-town in SW France :

Interesting to see that all the European mosques posted here are in the Turkish style. In France the mosques are unsurprisingly in the North African style.

Central mosque in Paris, one of the earliest built in Western Europe:

That's no mosque. It was never used as one and is one of those "faux" buildings...or whatever you want to call them. Like a romantic ruin or something like that.

Most modern mosques in Germany are horrible. They look like cheap copies of Ottoman mosques. Yuck.
