But the mosque in the first pic and the one in the second and third seem to be completely different buildings. The sec and third are not Bayrakli mosque.

A pretty Minaret in Moorish style, total height in excess of 60 meters, it's in southern Moravia in large Lednice Park, which is the Unesco heritage. It was built in 1797-1802 and I've read it is largest work in the moorish style in the non-Islamic countries, it is used as observation tower.

Mezquita de Córdoba, Spain. Probably, the most beautiful mosque in Europe (Nowadays, it is the Cordoba's catholic cathedral)
image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() The oldest surviving significant Muslim building in all of Spain is the Mezquita (mosque) of Cordoba. Many Andalucian churches today either stand on the site of mosques or are simply converted mosques. Cordoba's Mezquita is one such monument - once the second largest mosque in the world, today a Roman catholic church. The Mezquita was founded by Abd ar Rahman I in 785 AD and then expanded by his successors in the 9th century. The mihrab (shown here), a niche in the mosque indicating the direction of Mecca (and hence the prayer) is located in the southern section, unique amongst all mosques that the mihrab does not point towards Mecca (east in this case). A commonly believed theory is that Abd ar Rahman I, originally from Damascus, oriented the mihrab to the south instead of east as if he were still in Damascus (Mecca is south of Damascus). The dome over the mihrab is lavishly decorated with heavenly motifs by mosaicists from Byzantine (modern day Istanbul) and were given specific instructions to imitate the superb mosaic work of the great mosque of Damascus. The Christian emperor of Byzantine supposedly also sent 1600 kgs of gold mosaics with the mosaicists, to give the mihrab characteristics of a Byzantinian church. http://www.flickr.com/photos/360pixels/2613617253/

Yeah I remember that story. I am really not the best one to ask about such issues but I think there are some rituals followed for when a site is initially declared as a mosque.
Cool thread btw! Here is the MENA thread about Middle-Eastern and North African Churches (which has pictures of my town's Spanish church ).http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=343152 |
