The Asian neighborhood of Sao Paulo

Liberdade is the name of a district in the borough of S, in So Paulo, Brazil. It is home to largest Japanese community outside Japan in the world that has been growing since the 1950s. Being So Paulo's own equivalent of Japantown in the USA, it is a haven for everything Japanese.

Significant populations of Chinese and Koreans also live in the district of Liberdade. It is served by the So Paulo Metro.

In January 2008 a project to revitalize the quarter, due the 100 years of Japanese immigration in Brazil, was approved by the mayor Gilberto Kassab. 40% of the restoration may be ready for the visit of the prince Naruhito to So Paulo in June 2008.

Interesting to see such an Asian enclave in a South American city.

Excellent photos, thanks for sharing them.

Liberdade is fascinating.
It really deserves a revitalization project.

Sao Paulo city alone has over a million people of Japanese descent (I believe the biggest japanese community out of Japan). Nowadays mostly 2nd or 3rd generations. Every corner of the city you will see people of Asian descent (Japanese, Korean and Chinese) and also millions of German, italian, portuguese, african, lebanese, polish, among other descents, and that is what makes SP unique and cosmopolitan (apart from its huge size). You find all kinds of races and all this "mix" makes SP what it is.

But I agree, Liberdade needs urgent retrofit. Ive been there and the impression I have is that there are mostly chinese and very few japanese there.

Cool stuff, good work showing that Brazil (Sao Paulo in particular) has the largest Japanese population out of Japan - and their impact is huge, it seems

Liberdade has 70.000 inhabitants!

But the oriental population in sp is about 800.000 people. (chineses, japaneses and koreans)

Only in the city!

About 500.000 japaneses, 200.000 chineses and 100.000 koreans.

Yes, a lot of asians! Actually, SP is the largest Japanese city in the world, outside of Japan.

The Brazilian advance of the Japanese company is performed these days.
The Japanese-person role is big.
