Korean pavilion

More pictures and animation of the pavilion >>www.expo2010china.hu or www.vilagkiallitas.hu

Concept

With land culture (China) and sea culture (Japan) surrounding the peninsula, Korea has been permeable to imported cultures and global influences, whose progressive mix defines contemporary Korean society. Using 'convergence' as the main theme, the Korea Pavilion is an amalgamation of 'sign' (symbol) and 'space': Signs become spaces, and simultaneously, spaces become signs.

Sign as Space

Han-geul, the Korean alphabet, is the prime element of 'signs' within the pavilion. The overall volume, lifted 7.2m above ground level, is created by converging these Han-geul letters, allowing signs to create the exhibition space, and so that the visitors can experience their geometry through horizontal, vertical and diagonal movements. The primary geometries that compose the Han-geul letters are universal to other cultures, thus acting as a sort of 'open' set of signs that is engaging to everyone. The exterior surfaces of the Korea Pavilion are clad in 2 types of pixels: Han-geul Pixels and Art Pixels. Han-geul Pixels are white panels with a relief of letters in three different sizes whose combination forms the majority of the exterior, mainly the peripheral surfaces. Most of the non-peripheral surfaces are composed of Art Pixels, which are 45cm x 45cm aluminum panels created by a Korean artist, Ik-Joong Kang, who is renowned for creating massive art walls out of small hand-painted tiles, either self-produced or by gathering from around the world (thus being another type of convergence)...

French project

Approved in march, the Pavillon France is designed by Jacques Ferrier:

A path leads visitors to the discovery of France around the 7 senses: the five known (sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste) but also the movement and balance. These last two lines are very important in Chinese culture.

Vertical Garden:

The building will get a 250 seats auditorium and exhibition rooms

The French architect Jacques Ferrier wanted to create a building for a "sensual city. 98% of visitors are Chinese. The pavilion, with its gardens and its exhibition halls, will make visitors discover the art of French lifestyle.

The program for the “Pavilion of Ideas,” in Shanghai, encompasses 4,300 square feet of auditorium, exhibition, cafe, retail, and reception spaces. Grass-covered ramparts will flank its marshmallow-like main volume, in which so-called “cilia” will protrude from an amorphous enclosure and sway in the wind. These 16-foot-long spines, which might be made of either bamboo or aluminum, will terminate in programmable lights that can project images, colors, and messages over the entirety of the facade. Presentations within the pavilion can be integrated with messages and images running along its exterior, and visitors can use real-time interactive technology to art-direct the pavilion’s skin. According to Heatherwick Studio’s submission text, the light-tipped cilia mwill also reach into the pavilion, each one forming a pixel on a giant interior screen.
The pavilion will be a taste of UK architecture ahead of London hosting the 2012 olympics.

100,000 LED-tipped “cilia,” with changing images of the UK and a continual changing building.
The building reflects the ever changing UK and breaking normal building convention.

Designed by the Heatherwick Studio,it is composed of 100,000 LED-tipped “cilia,” which the architect anticipates will be made of bamboo. Its facade not only lends the building an ethereal fuzziness, but also transforms it into a pixelated 3-D video billboard. Inside the cocoon-like interior, the rods’ tips will invert the facade to create a fully immersive, light-rich experience for the 40,000 visitors expected per day. …

The external “screen” will display morphing graphics related to Britain, designed by U.K. artists with real-time input from visitors. Despite all the movement, the building’s main job is to leave a fixed impression. After all, it will stand only for the expo’s six-month duration. Says Wood: “We have to create an image that can burn into people’s memory.”

I can not wait for this.. I put in for a month annual leave already from work, and am planning to go in august. the only thing about the expo is that hotels are quite expensive. one I looked at from the expo site was 10403 RMB that works out to be about 2400AUD - a little more than I wanted to spend, but getting on track. What will do they do with the site once the expo is over, I read that like pavillion type 1 is demolished or something.. a great job again by china with this project.
