It would be interesting to know if they were deemed to be of architectural merit or not, in other words, without cross rail would they have to have been protected, if they had been threatened in some other way.

Again though, all buildings have a history and it is always sad to see them go...

Whereabouts are we talking? What shops are there now?

I thought the entrance further towards Oxford Circus was going to be situated on Dean St, not Oxford St.

This is what worries me. I know London really needs crossrail and if this was the last time they pulled down old attractive buildings it would be fine. But what if a similar development was to be proposed in the middle of the grand Victorian West End. Would they tear down Regent Street for this? Where do you draw the line?
Ok,they wouldn't propose a scheme like that in the west end anyway and much of the area isn't "grand old" architecture, but 60's offices and mediocre victorian highstreet achitecture. And for gods sake, these are not attractive buildings! Its like saying in 100 years time we should keep all the glass boxes! Some people in London seem to be stuck in 1900's.

Losing these buildings is sad but my concern is also that the replacement will be generic corporate shit

Well yes of course it will be, because there's no way they'll be allowed to do anything interesting or exciting, because it will be detrimental to the feel of, er...detract from the views of, er...out of keeping with, er...

Derwent London released results this week & in it was a hint of what they might have planned for the Xrail site.

Oh...my...this first glimpse makes me think they are going to treat this special site as if it was anywhere in the City or CW...oh dear...the invasion of the glass boxes return...at a corner near you...

hmm, i like the idea of opening up the church, and a route to soho square.

But the massing of those buildings looks terrible, and that horribly congested corner at charing x rd and oxford street doesn't seem to have been given any attention at all.

Poor show, should be taken back to the drawing board

Very A&M if anything - looks like Sutton Row will be pedestrianised which is to be welcomed and will help to draw people along to Soho Square. Presumably the pink building on the left with the escaltors will be the new station entrance opening out onto the new "public realm" - moving it away from Oxford St and around to Charing Cross Road (station name change anyone?)

Boring boxy shit A&M rubbish, if it is them . If they tear down old buildings facades which are perfectly ok ,then I think they should replace them with buildings that suit the area's architecture ie something akin to what's going on over the road that Quinlan Terry is doing. I would of suggested to make the junction with Oxford street more of a curve allowing more space and pehaps a collonade into Tottenham Court Road.

A+M would go perfectly, being opposite a Seifert afterall.

They aren't A+ M though.

I just hate the way we destroy our streets with more unimaginative boxes with stone cladding, as if that will solve the problem. The reason why this Corner looks interesting is because the buildings are so interesting....well they were if they were looked after well.

Ok so who is it then? Lifschutz Davidson?

but 400sq m is very small. What is the size of the current one?

Indeed the angle of TCR and Oxford Street should be rounded and made wider, it's so crowded out there and with Crossrail it'll get worst.

I though it was possible to build taller on these sites?
