The site is currently a semiarid wasteland. One of the goals of GIFT is to transform this till now virtually unusable area into a green and environmentally sustainable metro area with a spectacular waterfront. Massive river-linking and irrigation projects will further this along.

Here is the current site as of several months ago. Land clearing has finished and basic groundwork is underway.

I see tracks, but I don't see the equipment.
It looks like a pretty small area for a financial tech center.
Hopefully all the proposals are passed and we get to see more machines at work.

Not looking to start anything here, because I know how these things can be construed, but does the Gateway to India really represent "traditional Indian architecture"? To my knowledge it's more a colonial pastiche of Mughal styles. This is part of India's history too but I would have thought truly indigenous Indian architecture would be better represented by older, pre-Islamic styles.

Colonial Indian architecture, though it may not be a hundred percent classical Indian architecture is still Indian architecture. The European colonial period in India lasted around 500 years, and the Islamic colonial period some 500 years more. During this time syncratic fusion archtiectural styles blossomed into full fledged architectural traditions in and of themselves, both Mughal and Indo-Saracenic architecture included. Those forms in particular owe far more to indigenous architectural and artistic development than original non-Indian input.

The Gateway of India is as much a product of Indian (both Mughal as well as Gujarati and Rajasthani architecture, to wit the Maratta fort reflects.) It is a fusion of styles that represents an architectural whole greater than its parts.

That being said, the Gateway of India is the historic ediface that defines the city of Mumbai. A monument pompously erected by a foreign power for a city built for the exclusion of Indians, the monument represents the transformation of India from a colonial occupied state to an expanding power, and the equal transformation of Mumbai from colonial to Millennium city.

I can think of no other fitting monument to pay homage to in this next step in the evolution of the Indian metropolis than have such a forward looking monumental structure grace the GIFT skyline as the Gateway of India-inspired Gateway Towers.
