Kettal's Krosstown REX | Fantasy
I have the map of my REX line here: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/display...7.106.177.html
It uses existing rail corridors and hydro corridors to make a fast journey with very infrequent stops. The main purpose of this line is speed. What kind of technology will it use? I am unsure at this point. A consideration is that it will probably have to share the railway with heavy locomotives, but at the same time it will pass through hydro corridors, and all efforts should keep it to be quiet through these stretches (often it passes behind the back yards of family homes). I am leaning towards LRT, as it may have to travel on Eglinton Avenue East in the areas of Don Mills Road, but only for a short stretch. I guess there might have to be hybrid railway tracks on Eglinton to accept a standard gauge vehicle in addition to the TTC's during this short stretch. Discuss |

I'm not sure about using the hydro corridor in Scarborough. Apart from the technical issues, hydro corridors aren't entirely desirable for high density areas. The corridor would be an excellent place to route High Speed lines to Montreal and Ottawa, though.
Regardless we'll have to extend the CN freight bypass and kick out CP freight trains from the downtown core if we ever want to utilize the CP Midtown line to its fullest extent. |

Kettal, have you ever been to the area where Sheppard veers south? Yeah, it has cliffs scattered throughout the edge of the valley. The valley is at least 400 feet deep at that section.

Kettal, an excellent idea. I have not yet checked out the exact route on GE but the general path is perfect, a quick way to get 'across-town.' Your station placement is generally good at major intersections, I would only add a station near Sherway Gardens, and perhaps Royal York, and Vic Park. I think the line should 'somehow' meet up with the Lakeshore line sooner, I have no idea where though. And of course ALL of the freight traffic should be transfered to lines north of Toronto if possible.
Instead of GO Transit pushing this kind of idea decades ago, they sold or leased the old railway station at Yonge and Davisville (I think) to the LCBO. I mean great long term planning ...

^Yeah I had always thought GO had made one hell of a gaffe by doing that.
I may not be a fan of the ICTS GO ALRT project but it would be nice if GO could truely take on a REX type project with electrified rail on the larger rail corridors we have. ![]() In red are rail lines we have in the city that could be made into an electrified network of S-baun styled commuter lines. It is for illustration purposes and ignores all of the techinalities like width of the row, sharing with freight, nymbyism, political interferences, and whatever else I've missed. Back in the day, GO ALRT was just a vision of rapid commuter transit. This is just merely a fantasy take on it. Paris has an interesting commuter rail sytem that is electrified and fully integrates with its metro. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RER Last edited by Homer J. Simpson; August 8th, 2008 at 10:39 PM. |

Now that you mention it, there's no need for it to cross the valley just to get to Pickering GO. I only did it because it seemed the most convenient route on the map. Perhaps it could connect with Rouge Hill GO instead, but getting it there without interfering with existing roads and homes may be a problem.

Rouge Hill is still Scarborough, though.

You say that like it's a bad thing?
![]() No worries, it can turn and share the tracks with Lakeshore GO trains as far east as you want from that point. Problem solved. The west end is what I'm concerned about though, I can't find a logical terminus other than Mississauga city centre. |
