Moderators please consolidate this discussion under Sydney Airport (SYD) - Pictures/News/Discussion
Makes sense to have the 2 combined considering this thread only has 6 pages vs 53.

If plans are ever finalised to build a new airport for the Sydney area, would the existing Sydney Airport be closed down and redeveloped upon the new airport's opening (if that ever happens)?

I would think the Sydney area population is large enough that it can sustain two major airports operating simultaneously.

It could, but the land the current airport sits on is prime land. It could easily be redeveloped to help pay for the new airport. Its only about 4 stations from Sydney Central, developers would love to get their hands on the area.

Another option is to scale down a lot of operations there. Maybe move all international flights to the new airport, keep the current domestic terminal and runways etc.

Milano II? that would be the biggest mistake ever taken by Sydney. Many people fly to other australian cities and even New Zealand through Sydney, what would happen to all those connections?

I think current Sydney airport is large enough and perfectly located for the city. Notice it's also well connected to the CBD, it's not just an airport that would need to be rebuilt, but also a whole new network of infrastructure.

Where do KLM and Aerlingus operate from, if not the new terminal nor the closed old terminal?

Neither airline operates to/from SYD. Instead, both carriers operate as codeshare services from SIN, BKK, and KUL.

Bring a lot of patience if you plan on visiting Sydney, It took me more than an hour to get tru the immigration lines even though there was a special lanes for Australians and New Zealanders already ... Only 4 windows were open out of the 8 in the foreign passports lines so yes it is worst than NAIA based on my experience ...

Australia's Sydney Airport served 2.99 million passengers in May, a 3.1% rise compared with the same period in 2013. The rise in passenger traffic can be primarily attributed to the growth in Chinese passengers, which increased by 11.4% during the month.
