Penang Second Bridge today!

Bumper to bumper traffic at the new bridge

GEORGE TOWN: The undersea tunnel linking the island to the mainland in Penang is still needed despite the opening of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The third link, the tunnel between Gurney Drive and Bagan Ajam, would serve as a development game-changer and catalyst for economic growth for north Seberang Prai.

“It will also reduce traffic congestion on the island,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

Lim was responding to calls by certain parties wanting the proposed third link to be scrapped.

“There were only two flimsy objections given – namely that there is no need for a third link as there are now two bridges to reduce the traffic congestion in the state, and environmental concerns of building an under-seabed tunnel.

“Any basic transportation study will bear out the premise that for an island, the more links the better in terms of reducing traffic bottlenecks and traffic congestion,” he said.

Lim said the tunnel would bring development to north Seberang Prai as central Seberang Prai could be served by the Penang Bridge and south Seberang Prai by the new bridge.

At another function, Lim said the Penang Government supported the Federal Government’s decision in naming the new bridge after the King.

“Naming the bridge comes under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, and we support the choice that has been made,” he said at a press conference after a gotong-royong in Taman Hijau, Batu Lanchang here yesterday.

At a visit to the Government House, when Lim was asked about the toll rate for the new bridge, he declined to comment, as the fixing of the rate came under the purview of the Federal Government.

Perhaps things will settle down AFTER everybody got their turn driving on the said bridge?

Any possibility of having that undersea tunnel serve as both a road and rail link? Why not look into that?

That is less likely to happen (road + rail) unless there is firm commitment to build rail system in the same time in the implementation of the tunnel. Otherwise it will end up destroying the business case for the tunnel.

Even the tunnel itself is a huge undertaking for both the firm and even the state government. Of course, if the tunnel managed to be implemented (costly and without expense from the state government)......it will be a big milestone in Malaysia's history.

Everyone is a 'new toilet bowl'

I think the bottle-next on the island landing would be very bad considering the road infrastructure there isn't too developed to divert the traffic.

It's toll free, why would ppl miss this opportunity.
I guess it will continue for 1 month until toll is implemented.

Agree. Is it jamming also in the morning? They should make it 3 lanes from the start, I knew it.

A friend got caught in the traffic jam on the 2nd bridge (island-bound) late evening yesterday and he observed the fact that for both exits (Bayan Lepas bound and George Town bound) met with major junctions (with the accompanying traffic lights) within 1 or 2km! If the authorities can somehow adjust the timing or better still remove it altogether, then the jam could be reduced.

I think traffic congestion only happened this month. Many road users still want to test drive on this bridge. But from my observation, express buses and lorries now use 2nd Bridge instead of 1st Bridge because near to industrial area both in island and mainland
