Celebration CHINA - Welcoming the Olympics #2

8.8.08

1. China's last dynasty was ruled by a foreign tribe, which is why some of the signage had both Chinese and the foreign script.

2. When the imperial dynasty came to an end, the Forbidden City was still under construction. This one was supposed to mimick a Western design, and now remains unfinished a hundred years on.

3. I took 4.5 hours strolling around the Forbidden City, taking pictures of every building I came across. I didn't finish.

4. Some of the restoration works was a bit excessive. I like seeing some historic degradation from the elements for old buildings.

6. Admission was bargain cheap - around CNY 40 from my recollection, or about USD 6.

7. Much of the interior decorations in the Forbidden City are no longer there - either looted by the Europeans when they invaded Beijing at the turn of the 20th century, or taken to Taiwan when the Nationalists fled in 1949.

8. Some hutongs have been renovated to give a quaint feel.

9. The hutongs date from Mongolian times (13th century).

10. Cheap food!

11. The imperial city designers built a lot of parks and lakes to beautify Beijing.

12. Now back to appreciating the Forbidden City :

22. China's growing ties with Africa

23. The new Beijing includes wide boulevards and sidewalks, although crossing the street is a monumental task and the streets are probably too dangerous to be on during the cold depths of winter.

28. Welcome to Beijing. We are ready.

Beautiful pictures! I hope to visit China one of these days in the not too distant future. I'm also looking forward to waking up in 5.5 hours to watch the opening ceremonies. I'll be tired as hell all day tomorrow, but it'll be worth it.
