Yes the sarawak way of development. Hope that SCORE will develop central sarawak even further to balance the general development of the land of the hornbills. I'd seen the highway connecting tanjung Manis to Sibu(from a flight to Sibu). It's completely connected of course by soil and rocks 1st. you can see lots machineries on the roads and all the rivers(around 7-9) of them starting to build bridges, some longer than the current longest bridge to cross a river(Lanang), more than 1km long. Good job Shin Yang! Hope that it will be completed ahead of schedule (so do Bakun)

Long queues at Nyelong ferry point

Eastern Times

Heavy traffic at the Nyelong ferry point as motorists wait to board the ferries.

By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: The number of vehicles using the Nyelong ferry point is expected to increase in the next two days as Hari Raya Aidilfitri draws nearer.
Such increase is anticipated, especially during the “Balik Kampung” exodus that is beginning to pick up ever since last Friday.
It is normal for those working outstation to start taking leave at this time of the year.
The Nyelong ferry point is subjected to a heavy flow of traffic as more and more vehicles are using the point to reach the town of Sarikei.
The motorists have to queue up for their turn to cross the Nyelong River on board one of the two ferries operating at the point.

New Nyelong Bridge soft opens on Oct 26

The Eastern Times

The existing two ferries are expected to cease operation by November 1.

By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: The new Nyelong Bridge located at Jalan Melanti will open for use by the public from 7.00 pm on October 26, according to Datuk David Teng Lung Chii, Assistant Minister of Food Industries, as he chaired a preparatory meeting to discuss details on various programmes scheduled for the grand occasion. He said works and finishing touches on the RM22 million bridge project were entering the final stages now.
Also present at the meeting were Sarikei Member of Parliament, Ding Kuong Hiing, Sarikei Devision Resident, Michael Dawi Allie, and his deputy, Felicia Tan Ya Hua, and heads of local government departments and statutory bodies.
The bridge, Teng added, will provide a direct transport link for the residents of Sarikei and Bintangor, helping to speed up agricultural development in more remote interior and bring further economic progress to the areas concerned.
The soft opening event on October 26 would feature a simple walk-over ceremony and presentation of various cultural dances and songs, said Teng.
Heads of government departments, statutory bodies, community leaders as well as members of the public would be expected to witness the important event.
Meanwhile, Teng, who is also state assemblyman for Repok, thanked the government for the bridge project which will provide much convenience for people in the areas concerned.
After the opening of the bridge, the existing two ferries would be expected to cease operations with effect from November 1.

Despite its status as a Malaysian state, actually Sarawak is like one separated country.... its economic can stand on its own feet. Blessed by large potential areas, so far Sarawak's emerging development has been supported by two important factors: both quality of human capital and enormous natural resources.

...as comparison, its neigbour Brunei Darussalam is an independent nation, but this tiny sultanate has much smaller area, population, resources and influences than Sarawak's.

SDC, hawkers clean up open air market
By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: A gotong royong cleanliness campaign involving the Sarikei District Council (SDC) and hawker stall owners from the open air market was successfully held yesterday.
SDC Health Superintendent, Wong Sie Mee, when contacted at the same venue said the campaign was hosted to maintain the cleanliness at the respective stalls in the double-storey building.
He was pleased by the encouraging response from the stall owners.
Meanwhile, he reminded them to keep their stalls clean at all times and get rid of rubbish as soon as possible. He said their action should also extend to that of nearby drains and compounds so that a clean environment would attract more customers.
This, he added, would be particularly important for food outlets and other eateries. A high standard of hygiene must be maintained, he advised.
Sarikei Division Hawkers’ Association Chairman, Chuo Lang Kiong and others were also present at the event.

By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: The proposed new Sarikei courthouse costing RM6.8 million and located at Jalan Bangunan Kerajaan would start construction soon.
With the proposed project taking eighteen months to complete, the new courthouse will form part of the federal government’s programme to improve existing legal facilitating system in the division.
The construction project is undertaken to beef up the legal facilities of the current old structure courthouse strategically sited in the town area and located along Jalan Nyelong.
With an increase in functions and legal activities in recent years, the existing space of the old court building is considerably inadequate and lacking proper and efficient administrative facilities.
Assistant Minister of Food Industries, Datuk David Teng Lung Chii, accompanied by the magistrate Norhamizah bte Shaiffuddin, Sarikei Divisional Public Works Department Engineer Tiong King Wei and local heads of government departments visited the site yesterday.
When met at the scene, Teng, the Assistant Minister of Local government, reiterated that the new building project, once completed, would be able to achieve the objective to cater TO the needs for a better place to sustain proficient judiciary processes for the people of this division.
At the briefing process, it was learnt that the whole construction project would comprise a court house, guard house, mechanical and electrical building, open car park and shaded car park.
Additional facilities would include a Sesco sub-station and bin collection centre for the proper disposal of rubbish and other unwanted materials.
