A lot of the potential accusers will go down with the building. So that's a little less risk there.

All I can say is how amazed I am at the way AWV project is moving along. You can feel the change already.

I guess they know what they're doing, right? They know so much more that I ever would about arches and whatnot from the Disc Channel. Still, fifty-seven feet! That's mighty big, plus skyscrapers on top of it. I'm sure it will be fine.

I believe the establishment of an underworld of survivors is also anticipated. This will be effectively a janitorial service for the tunnel.

"Bertha"

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Tunn...182926861.html

So now we'll have both a Bertha and a Brenda tunneling beneath our streets.

This issue is discussed by Bertha Galaviz, own owns Bertha's Cleaning Service in West Seattle and now shares a name with the big machine... (see article)

From todays DJC

http://www.djc.com/news/co/12048049.html

December 11, 2012

TBM is named after Bertha Knight Landes
By JOURNAL STAFF

Bertha Knight Landes was a ground-breaking woman and now a ground-breaking tunnel machine will bear her name as it digs along the Seattle waterfront.

Names were submitted by K-12 students with these criteria: names had to be female and reflect Washington's heritage, life, nature, transportation or engineering. More than 150 entries were submitted to a selection panel that included Gov. Chris Gregoire and Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond.

Landes was elected mayor of Seattle in 1926, and was the first woman to lead a major American city.

“This project is about breaking new ground,” said Charles Royer, a former Seattle mayor who helped pick the new name. “Like the SR-99 tunneling machine, Bertha Knight Landes was one of a kind. It's only fitting that the machine bears her name.”

Hitachi Zosen Corp. is putting the final touches on the machine in Japan. Crews last week installed the 57.5-foot-diameter cutterhead. Ownership of the TBM will be transferred later this month to Seattle Tunnel Partners, the joint venture building the tunnel.

The TBM will be disassembled and loaded onto a ship scheduled to arrive in Seattle next spring. Tunneling will start next summer at the launch pit west of Seattle's stadiums.

The winning name was submitted by two entrants: Darryl Elves' fifth-grade class at Poulsbo Elementary School and Elijah Beerbower, a second-grader at Lincoln Elementary School in Hoquiam. They will be invited to Bertha's dedication ceremony next summer and will receive special T-shirts.

Cleaning up 3rd Avenue downtown. I just don't think this will work. Bravo for the effort though:

In addition to the police patrols, Sido said the agreement calls for the installation of new street furniture, overhead weather protection and real-time transit information and more trash cleanups in the afternoons and evenings. He was unsure of the cost of the initiative.
It's lame they don't mention installing some cameras for remote monitoring and recording of the worst spots around Pike/Pine - 2nd/3rd.

Wow, that TBM is almost comically huge. I'm glad they're doing streetscape improvements to try to reduce crime in that area - police can only do so much, and after a certain point are not nearly as cost effective as solutions like CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) that aim to get more towards the root of the problem.

Almost?! As much as I hate the tunnel project, the engineer in me can't help loving mankind's ability to make machines that large. Compare the size of one of those workers to just a lifting lug.

Weird. Another PSBJ article on the subject. Same day? Different reporters but very similar. I like the second article better!!

I'm glad cameras are mentioned in that story. There's a TSA or Coast Guard (or some agency installing surveillance cameras along the waterfront (last I heard) so they are coming. To be clear, I don't believe they stop crime but they should help investigators solve crimes and in some cases put away criminals.

What is the most expensive part of the tunnel project? It looks like the boring machine "only" cost $80 million (at least according to Wikipedia). Is it really just that expensive to operate it?
