Area man brings public golf to Colombia

Tony Ciabattoni is a perfect example of a man who has followed his heart.

As a self-described "South Park-Schenley Park" kind of golfer, Ciabattoni's roots as a public course player run deep.

The 1981 Chartiers Valley High School graduate fondly remembers those days and how he left high school with a two-handicap. The above-average golf game, a good business judgment and the sense to follow his heart have led him around the world.

Playing golf in Aruba resulted in his meeting his future wife, Sandra, which led to him moving to Bucaramanga, Colombia (also known as COL). And that has led him to an undertaking -- building a golf facility in the South American country -- that can be termed as ambitious.

"There are two private clubs in town (in Bucaramanga), but no public golf courses," Ciabattoni said on a recent trip home. "I grew up in Pittsburgh playing public golf and know that it is a great experience. Once the thought was nurtured in my mind, it started to become a dream that I could positively affect the lives of an entire metropolitan area.

"The money that I spent buying the land was more than I expected, but upon signing the deed, I was the complete opposite of nervous. It appeared this new dream was actually possible."

Ciabattoni quickly points out that there is more to Colombia (also known as COL) than what routinely blares across international news outlets. Yes, there are cities such as Bogota, Cali and Medellin -- and all of the problems associated with them.

Bucaramanga, however, resembles Pittsburgh in Ciabattoni's mind, and it is known as "The Pretty City."

"People have this misconception that Colombia (also known as COL) is a third-world country, and that's not the case. Second-world for sure, but not third-world," he said.

Plans for Ciabattoni's golf facility (built on 12 acres of farmland) include a six-hole, par-3 course; a 10-bay, nighttime-only driving range; a pitch and putt which will be free to children younger than 12; and a miniature golf course.

The name of the facility? Green Tree Golf, after his home in Pittsburgh.

It's not like Ciabattoni is taking golf into a vast wasteland. One of the PGA Tour's brightest young stars is Colombian Camilo Villegas. In 2007, Maria Jose Uribe won the U.S. Women's Amateur, defeating Amanda Blumenherst, 1-up.

Ciabattoni has held a couple "get to know us" functions at the site that eventually will become the golf facility. His hope was to get some of the locals together, present the game of golf and get them involved.

"Each time, the kids came up to us and said, 'Teach me how to do that.'"

Ciabattoni has a Pittsburgh-based company, Fairways Corporate Golf Services Inc. He said he spent everything he had to buy the land for the course. He received $37,000 from individuals to build the course and clubhouse.

Friends from Chartiers Valley have taken up his cause and will host a benefit golf outing Saturday at Quicksilver Golf Course. Cost is $500 per foursome, and the scramble event will begin at 9:30 a.m.

"I played with these guys on the golf team from 1978-80, and they thought it was a great opportunity to do something for a CV guy and, more importantly, for a great cause," Ciabattoni said. "I was very flattered."

GREEN TREE GOLF | BUCARAMANGA

Tony Ciabattoni

After 20 years of running corporate golf events from my home base in Pittsburgh, I am now living in Bucaramanga, Colombia with my wife Sandra and her daughter, Catalina. Golf has been a passion of mine all of my life, and my new surroundings do not change that. In fact, I have a new-found passion that I hope you will share with me.

Bucaramanga, Colombia and its neighboring cities of Floridablanca, Girón and Piedecuesta have a population of approximately 1.5 million people. The city has three private golf clubs within the city limits but no public facility, no driving ranges, and one very small, paltry miniature golf facility.

Golf has been called “A Game For Life” and I am grateful to have been brought up in the game by my father. I am saddened by the fact that economic conditions have not allowed golf to prosper in this area.

To underestimate the potential draw of golf in Colombia would be to ignore global golf statistics, even in soccer-crazed countries. Golf is flourishing and will continue to grow globally. In some instances, it needs nurturing and cared for. Colombia is one of those instances.

Many of you know that Colombia has a player on The PGA Tour, Camilo Villegas. Camilo has burst onto the scene in the last 3 years, and his stellar play and two victories in 2008 have earned him a place among golf’s elite players. His “Spider Man” style of reading greens, his trends in clothing, and his swashbuckling style of play have gained him huge popularity worldwide. He is a sporting hero in Colombia, in a country dominated by soccer, baseball, and basketball.

As many of you might not know, Colombia produced a National Amateur champion in Maria Jose Uribe. Maria Jose won the 2007 Women’s US Amateur, beating the best collegiate play in the finals. She also happens to be from Bucaramanga. Maria Jose learned the game at one of the private clubs in town. We are all wishing Maria Jose the very best as she enters her first year of college at UCLA.

The average income in this area is approximately $350 per month. It is unrealistic that a “family-style” facility that we are proposing could make enough money to recoup the costs associated with building the course.

My initial belief was that land would be cheap and easy to come by. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Colombia is growing its infrastructure and also its image in world opinion. In a country not long ago plagued by security issues, Colombia is now fueled by six years of progress, not only in personal security, but global commerce as well.

Bucaramanga is the country’s 5th largest city and has never been afflicted with the past issues of notorious cities like Bogota, Cali, or Medillin, even though these cities have shed their past images to find themselves reborn into the great cultural cities they once were. Bucaramanga carries the moniker, “the Pretty City” and is known for its many city parks.

Construction is everywhere down here and therefore land here is at a premium. The area is also very mountainous and flat land is also scarce.

We have purchased a piece of land on the edge of Piedecuesta, approximately 10 miles from the downcenter , and only 2 miles from the center of Piedecuesta, a bustling town of laborers and merchants. The land is approximately 12 acres in dimension and has a lovely little stream surrounding 60% of its oval shape.

What we plan on building on this land is:

• A 5-hole Par 3 Course

• A driving range

• A 4 hole Pitch & Putt – FREE for children under 12

• A Miniature golf course

The facility will bear the name, Tierra Del Sol named after the place in Aruba where I met my wife.

Sandra and I are now living in a house adjacent to the land so we will be intimately involved with the day to day operations. We have spent nearly all of our lives savings on buying the 12 acres and building the new house next to the course.

Our initial budget to BUILD THE COURSES and CLUBHOUSE is $150,000. We cannot afford to do this alone. We are looking for friends and partners to help. The sport that we love and take for granted is out of reach for the common citizen due to land costs and average income. Help us build a place for the children and familes of Colombia.
