Welland, Ontario

Welland is a city in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, along the Welland River and Welland Canal. The city has a population of around 50,000.

Welland was settled when an aqueduct was needed to have the Welland Canal cross over the Welland River. A small town grew around this aqueduct, as businesses took advantage of the crossing traffic. The community was originally known as Aqueduct, and later Merrittsville, after Welland Canal initiator William Merritt. The current name of Welland was given to the community when it was incorporated in 1858.

The Main Street Bridge, officially known as Bridge 13, over the old Welland Canal. Since the Welland Canal was re-routed around Welland in the early 1970s, the bridge does not need to be lifted any more. The old Welland Canal channel through the town is now called the Welland Recreational Waterway.
