Momo in Japan: The other side of Tokyo, Nakano, Nakai & Mejiro

These pictures were taken during two walks, the first is around Nakano and the second started in Nakai and ended in the Tokyo Dome City.

1. NTT DoCoMo Nakano Building in Nakano

2. The Chuo line rail corridor cuts straight trough the neighbouhood

3.

4. The Kindergarten on Tour

5. The typical small streets in this neighborhood

6.

7. Former Dutch Glory, a Tomos moped that has seen better days.

8. Sakura Season (cherry blossom), so pink lanterns in the street

9. Nakano Sun Plaza from the back

10. Shopping streets

11.

12.

13. Temple

14.

15.

16. No space is wasted, resulting in some interesting contrasts

17.

18. Interesting but not really special architecture

19.

20. Carwash

21. More contrast

22.

23. And then you come from the "quite" suburban neighborhood into the busy and very urban Yamate-dori. The white towers are for the construction work going on.

24. FamilyMart, always good for a quick food and drink pitstop.

Here ends my first walk, the next part was 2 days later and started just a bit North of were the first part ended.

25. From Nakai station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line

26. Commuters going from the train to the Metro

27. The Busy line runs straight through the neighborhood with lot's of level crossings.

28.

29.

30.

31.

32.

33. road work

34.

35.

36.

37.

38. Shimo-Ochiai Station

39. The abandoned bicycle dump

40.

41. More interesting architecture

42.

43. Concrete rivers

44.

45. Hilly Tokyo

46.

47. Around Mejoiro Station

48.

49. Introduction at Gakushuin University

50.

51. Toden Arakawa Tram Line

52.

53. a very old street

54.

55.

56. Kishinbojin Temple

57. Fire protection is a big issue in Tokyo

58.

59. small shopping street

60.

61.

62.

63. Gated community

64 I end the serie around Edogawabashi

65.

More pictures of this walk will come in a later in a new thread.

Excellent tour! It must be difficult to drive over so narrow streets... For a moment I felt a bit sick about those many wires, but Tokyo is Tokyo it has it own outstanding personality.

God this city is a never ending maze!!!
Those small streets are fascinating to me

I've never seen such a thing here in the U.S. even in New York.

Anyways I wonder how all the stores make money... there's billions to choose from

Thanks Momo

I used to live in Shin-Nakano (for a year). Nice to see the areas again that weren't so far away & others.

Where exactly is the blue building (the "more interesting architecture" shot) Momo?

Tokyo is so amazing! I mean, those neighbour hoods are in fact super ugly, if you look at the architecture and crazy cityplanning (I couldn't live there)...but just amazing. I love looking at Tokyo pictures so much! Well, I am Anime/Manga fan too. ^__^/

It's located on the Shin-Mejiro-dori just north of Shimo Ochiai station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line: Google Maps Streetview

These shots just show what a fantastically organic entity Tokyo is, something which distances itself from the highly planned and regulated cities you tend to get in the new world.

Thank you for sharing these fantastic shots.

Everything's so small! Must be difficult to get used to when you travel from the US to Japan.

I always love pictures of Japan, nice series.

The most intersting Japan thread I have ever seen! The pictures are great! But I am a bit disappointed to see overland phone/electric cables!!! What is the average size of apartments in Japan. They look miniaturesque to me!

Excellent tour! Very nice shots. Some favorites... #5, 10, 11, 17, 19.

Also, I am pressed with how clean things appear. Thumbs-up to the Japanese. For example, note the absence of litter (#31, 38, 47, 59). If I took similar shots in Seattle there would be paper, fast food wrappers/cups, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, etc. littering ths street, sidewalk and curb.

Thanks for posting.
