[Rijeka] - Construction Update (ENGLISH)

Gomila Project consists of planning, projecting and building of housing-commercial trade complex with underground garage for 1000 vehicles on historical site of Old town centar. because of this placement project will try to keep historical matrix by using old building project documentation. Realization of the project will try to recreate one-time apperance of Old town. Project documentation is expected to be finished by the end of 2008.



Area of Gomila complex is 6500m2
Gross of Gomila project is 25.000m2 for garage, 17.500m2 for housing-commercial trade complex and 2.000m2 for public areas and streets.

Estimated invesment is around 70 mil €

Gomila is North-western Part of Rijeka’s Old Town. It is situated near all major institutions of Rijeka.

Official mascot shall be named during the public polls of the citizens of the city of Rijeka and Croatia in months to come.

The mascot visually represents the stylization of the water wave and its physical appearance is inspired by the elements of water, dynamics, animation, a swimmer. Symbolic of the character is tied with Rijeka, city host, a city on Mediterranean sea with a new complex of sport swimming pools that are specific for their location at the very sea shore. The driving wheel of the new sociable happenings in Rijeka Is often called “the wave of Rijeka”, as the synonym for the success of the young athletes or the specific music expression of the town rockers.

In an unpredictable movement and the dynamics of the “wave” seem to be kept the important terms of reference of the sport competition that is full of unpredictability and intertwined emotions. Cheerful figure like it just jumped out of disturbed water, will accompany us till the end of the 2008. In its cheerful company we will welcome guests, competitors, experience records, escort medals ... and catch a wave of sport successes!

Martinkovac-Diracje 1000 new apartments - 150 mil €, start in 2009, expected in 2012


According to the urbanistic plan of Rijeka tihs project is planned to be in Martinkovac area above western part of rijeka bypass betwin Diračje intersection on the east, OMV petrol station on the west and Europetrol petrol station on the north. This area is 100.000m2 big, planned gross construction area is 107.000m2 residential and 17.000m2 cemmercial.

Area is divided into 3 zones

Zone 1:

• on the northern part of this area, just below Europetrol petrol station
• residential area
• buildings for one or more families
• allowed to build ground floor and 2 overhead floores
• 30.000 m2 of gross residential area
• smallest allowed constrution parcel is 600 m2 to 1.200 m2

Zone 2:

• above the bypass and below of zone 1 area
• residential area
• multiple apartment buildings
• allowed to build ground floor and 5 overhead floores
• 77.000 m2 of gross residential area
• smallest allowed constrution parcel is 2.000 m2

Zone 3:

• just above the bypass and below of zone 2 area
• commercial area
• 17.000 m2 of gross commercial area

Kastav Trade Center - 200 mil €, start in 2009

This project is planned to be built above OMV petrol station, above rijeka bypass, near new Martinkovac project. The investor for this project is Jaroslav Tresnak from Czech Republic and his company Tre Invest.

this is northern area of Krk island. this is the area where port of Rijeka is planned to expand. it is also the area where LNG terminal should be built. there are also plans to build new bridge and motorway across this area which should connect to the planned A7 motorway, and also the railway connection to new Rijeka-Zagreb railway.

this is going to be gymnasium for preparations of athletic teams and competitions in various sports (athletics, handball, basketball...)

it will have 8 50m tracks, area for all other disciplines (throwing, jumping...)

capacity of this hall is 330 seats on telescopic stands.

there will also be an pedestrian bridge betwin current Headquarters of Kvarner athletic club and the gymnasium.

The international architecture workshop on the reconstruction of a wider area of the oil refinery site at Mlaka, the first one in a four-year cycle of international, professional town-planning and architecture workshops titled 'Rijeka - Patching the City,' with the participation of students and architects from renowned European universities, will take place from 7 to 11 October 2008 in the premises of Filodrammatica in the Corso.


On the initiative of students from the Faculty of Ljubljana, the Rijeka Architecture Association has decided, in co-operation with the City of Rijeka and the oil refinery INA, to initiate the organisation of an international architecture workshop that would address the problems of urbanisation of sub-developed town fragments. Already in its earliest phase, in addition to the members of the RAA, to join the projects were architects from renowned European Universities (Faculties of architecture in Ljubljana, Zuerich, Vienna, Paris, Zagreb, Split) who should offer together with their students a conceptual solution within a four-day workshop that would be presented to the participants and guests on the last day of the workshop, on Saturday, 11 October.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, the workshop was presented by Igor Rožić, president of the RAA and the mayor of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel.

Rožić emphasised that in question is a four-year cycle of international, professional town-planning and architecture workshops titled 'Rijeka - Patching the City' where apart from a wider area of the oil refinery at Mlaka - the Delta area, a wider area of the former paper factory at Školjić and the abandoned port warehouses - will be discussed again on the widest professional basis.

The oil refinery site at Mlaka has been chosen because it is an area possessing the largest town-planning potentials in the city of Rijeka, said Rožić. At this point Mlaka is intriguing because it has an industry that in a foreseeable future will disappear, and the students will witness its disappearance from that location. Student engagement is good because it is unrestrained so that interesting solutions can be expected, while the international aspect is important both to RAA, and the City of Rijeka because co-operation on the tenders implemented up to now for the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Bus Terminal, and the City Library, as well as participation in the international architecture project EUROPAN 7 and 10, the construction of the new swimming-pools, have affirmed Rijeka as the most propulsive centre in terms of architecture, so that these workshops will just confirm the perception of Rijeka as a place where new architecture is uncompromisingly researched, confirmed Rožić.

Mayor Vojko Obersnel said that this project should give answers or, at least, provide a possibility to give new responses to a number of questions relating to the future of some locations in the town area. We live in a dynamic time where facilities occupied by industry are undergoing transformation. Although the models that will be offered by students and their tutors, all of them very respected professionals, are not binding, perhaps these workshops will point to the need to review the existing solutions of the Site Plan and the General Urban Development Plan or the County Site Plan, that they have been aligned with. Perhaps some of the attitudes will be redefined, because due to development dynamics, something that seven years ago seemed impossible to realise has become a realty today.

Not only is the aim of the workshop to get systematic and comprehensive professional town-planning and architecture solutions that could be implemented through modifications to the Site Plan of the City of Rijeka and the General Urban Development Plan, moreover, the aim is also to animate the general public in connection with the development of part of city areas and the accents that undoubtedly form the overall city identity, said Obersnel.

The following architects have been chosen as the workshop participants and workgroup tutors: Jurij Kobe and Tadej Glažar (Faculty of Architecture Ljubljana), Saša Bradić and Ines Nizić (TU Vienna), Hrvoje Njirić (Faculty of Architecture Split) Saša Randić and Idis Turato (Faculty of Architecture Zagreb) Jim Njoo (Faculty of Architecture La Vilette - Pariz) and Max Bosshard and Christoph Luchsinger (Zuerich/Winterthur).

Each tutor has chosen a group of (about) 5 students to participate with in the work of the scheduled seminar. Activities within the seminar "Rijeka-Patchwork" will take place in evening hours, supplemented by suitable presentations, where the workgroup tutors will represent their activities tied to similar projects, and discussion to follow will be moderated by the members of the management board of the RAA.

Final and refined town-planning and architecture solutions of all 7 groups of authors will be presented to the general public on 19 December 2008, at the City Hall, after their refinement over the whole semester at their respective alma mater universities.

Among the scheduled lectures we should mention, by all means, the visit of the Portuguese architect Manuel Grace Diasa who will give a presentation of his work on the reconstruction of the oil refinery in Lisbon that in early nineties was transformed from industrial plants into facilities where in 1998 EXPO was organised.
