Zagreb-Rijeka Motorway Completed

October 23rd 2008 11:52 am

From Zagreb to Rijeka in 90 minutes? Now it’s finally possible as the last stretch of the A6 has been completed after only 37 years of labour and 661.5 million euros.

The motorway is 146.5km long and extends north to Budapest, forming a speedy traffic corridor from the Hungarian capital down to the coast. Hungarian investors played an important role in financing this expensive project but the cost is expected to be recouped in tolls.

Rijeka - Zagreb Motorway Opened

With the last two sections on the Zagreb-Rijeka motorway completed, the 146-kilometre dual carriageway motorway was opened to traffic cutting down the trip between the two cities to just 75 minutes.

The construction work on the motorway began in 1971 and is valued at 660 million euros.

Also, the section of the motorway between Gorican and the Hungarian border and the new Mura bridge between Croatia and Hungary have been opened, so that now the Zagreb-Gorican motorway is fully operational.

As of 1 November, the motorway toll for this route will be HRK 60.

Prime Minister Sanader stated that this was the realization of a dream for the citizens of Croatia which could not be achieved during the period of Yugoslavian rule.
Croatia was not a priority in those times and could not lead independent politics as far as economics or any other aspect of life was concerned.

The president of the Croatian Cabinet Ivo Sanader left the discussion in parliament about confidence in his Cabinet, in order to attend the opening of the full profile freeway Rijeka-Zagreb at the south side of the Tuhobic tunnel.

“We waited 38 years for the freeway from Rijeka to Zagreb, and the political force that will have the strength and money to solve the problem” said premier Sanader. He declared the full profile freeway open and added that he sees today that serving the people through politics has sense.

Premier Sanader said that today a dream of Croatian people has been fulfilled that could not be achieved during Yugoslavia.

“Croatia was not a priority at the time, and could not lead sovereign politics but that which Belgrade dictated” said Sanader. He stressed that the road connections is an assumption for the total growth of economic activities and life in general.

The Rijeka – Zagreb freeway was under construction for 38 years, and its price was 661.5 million euros.

The 146 kilometre trip from Rijeka to Zagreb, with an average travelling speed, will be complete in one hour and 15 minutes, and will cost 60 kuna.

To complete the freeway, six bridges, 13 tunnels, 24 viaducts and 15 accompanying buildings were constructed.

The construction on the last two sections of freeway were completed on Monday, when the first people to drive on the full profile freeway were journalists.

'Open days 2008' in Rijeka

Quote:
Innovating regions: Promoting Research, Technological Development and Innovation Rijeka, 23 October 2008

A part of the "Open Days 2008" programme of the European Week of Regions and Cities titled "Promoting Research, Technological Development and Innovation" has been held in the City Hall today. A series of presentations were designated to show close connection between technological development and innovations, as well as the fact that for generating innovations close cooperation is needed between the private and public sectors, companies and universities.

The manifestation was inaugurated by the mayor of the City of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel, who reminded the participants that "Open Days" is an event organised for the sixth time in Brussels from 6 to 9 October by the Committee of the Regions of the European Parliament. It is a European week of cities and regions, where regions, cities, organisations from the public and private sector, financial institutions and civil society institutions, as partners through 140 events, seminars and workshops and many meetings strengthen territorial connection within the European Union. The event attracted 5,000 participants from 216 European regions and cities, thus making the manifestation "Open Days" the event of the year in the field of building and developing the European regional policy.

This year the City of Rijeka responded to the invitation of the Croatian Regions Office and the Committee of Regions to organise one event among single events within the manifestation. The chosen area was "Innovating Regions" so that the concept of the City of Rijeka as an intelligent city and the establishment of the first scientific and technology park in Croatia have been presented today to numerous participants of Open Days.

As underlined by the department head Smokvina, the City of Rijeka is recognisable in Croatia and wider by its concept of an intelligent city based on the scope, connection and use of data and information from all the segments of city life. Such data and information understanding and forming are used in decision-making processes and in managing long-term sustainable city development projects based on individual, institutional and collective know-how. It is only with implementing knowledge, synchronising all the participants by all life cycle phases, with use of information and telecommunication infrastructure, that it is possible to contribute to the economy of building, managing and using all the city capacities. Smokvina announced that soon three thoroughly prepared projects would be available for citizens: the multimedia portal of the City of Rijeka, a new interactive city map and follow up of the process of resolving citizens' applications addressed to the city government.

The scientific and technology park of the University of Rijeka (acronym STeP Ri) was established in order to create new knowledge and values that will contribute to faster development, through synergy of scientific, technological and entrepreneurial potentials. STeP's products and services are structured in such a manner that they lead young, newly set up companies and students "from the idea to the market" so that by forming new companies and their incubation, licensing new technologies and connecting the members of the university community, entrepreneurs and partners at national and international levels, they can join the society of knowledge and its implementations.

In co-operation with the Croatian Regions Office in Brussels, to join the Rijeka part of the programme were lecturers from Spain and England. Thus, the Spanish region Valencia is represented by Juan Manuel Revuelta, managing director of the Valencia office in Brussels, who spoke about the development strategy of technology parks of the European Union in the period from 2008 to 2013. Revuelta is also director of the association Fundacion Comunidada Valenciana – Region Europea engaged in the promotion of European policies through public-private partnership in which participate entities from the Valencia region, offering information on the initiatives of the European Union and their influence on the institutional, economic, social and cultural life of Valencia, raising awareness of European integrations and offering services and information deriving from all the fields of European policies.

To present the University of Leicester from Great Britain was Chris Jones, manager of Biobator, incubator at the School of Biological Sciences established on the initiative of the University as a platform for exploring and testing early stage commercial ideas. Biobator acts as a conduit between the University’s bioscience base, the commercial sector, regional and national support organisations and the wider community. It is also aimed at promoting knowledge exchange and commercial activities resulting from research at the University of Leicester.

The Rijeka part of the manifestation "Open days" gathered a large number of participants, employees of state, regional and local administration, private companies and public institutions dealing with the implementation of innovations. (S.R.)

Producer Branko Lustig supported the idea of an art-cinema

Rijeka, 31 October 2008

Branko Lustig, Croatian producer and winner of two Oscars, met with the mayor Vojko Obersnel and his associates to give his support to the idea of initiating an art-cinema that will be opened by the City of Rijeka in the premises of the former cinema Croatia in December.

The meeting of the mayor Obersnel and Mr Lustig was aimed at promoting and supporting the movie culture as an important segment of the cultural vision and development of Rijeka as a strong cultural and university city. Within the future Art Cinema Croatia, the City of Rijeka intends to offer its citizens premises where national, European and international film heritage as well as recent artistic achievements will be presented.

Producer Lustig expressed his enthusiasm about the premises that he found to be perfect for an art-movie and in his opinion the premises should be preserved just as they presently are, it is necessary to devise programmes, and what is more important, the cinema should attract a permanent audience.

The famous Croatian producer is considering presenting in Rijeka part of the Zagreb Jewish Film Festival programme, to be held in May of 2009. Lustig considers that today when there are so many film festivals around the world, guest-tours in different cities should be organised. With interesting guests and lectures given on the occasion, such events, said Lustig, could be a very good programme for the art-cinema that is being arranged in Rijeka. He also proposed opening of a video-rental shop, where films of major artistic value could be rented.

Mayor Obersnel pointed out that the idea of the City of Rijeka that the art-cinema is not just a place where movies will be projected, but also a place that will gather the people who like movies, and in the future perhaps a small library with materials including film topics.

Branko Lustig is the first Croatian producer who has won two Oscars (Schindler's List in 1993 and Gladiator in 2001), and a number of other awards. Having achieved a very long and prolific international career he has returned to Croatia where he is taking a more and more active role in the film world. As an excellent film producer he works whole-heartedly both on the promotion of the film art and Croatian cinematography.
