The first solar photovoltaic system in Rijeka

Rijeka, 14 May 2009, http://www.rijeka.hr/Default.aspx?art=18960&sec=394

The first solar photovoltaic system in Rijeka has been installed on the roof of the Municipal Building, thus marking the beginning of the production of electrical energy from renewable sources. The solar plant was presented within the celebration of the launched campaign, "European Solar Days", which aims to raise awareness among the citizens of the solar energy.

The daily production of electrical energy emits huge quantities of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and furthermore annually about 81 tons of toxic mercury, and large quantities of other dangerous gasses. By strengthening the awareness about the need to use renewable energy sources many countries have adopted the plans whereby over the next 20 years they plan to increase significantly the production of electrical energy from renewable sources.

In February 2009, the City of Rijeka joined the European initiative "The Covenant of Mayors" that co-ordinates and directs the efforts on the achievement of the so called "3x20" goals by 2020, as a response to the current climate and energy challenges. It means a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, a reduction in energy consumption by 20% and increased consumption of energy deriving from renewable sources up to 20%.

The City Government at its session held in November 2008, adopted a four-year activity plan regarding the energy development which goals have been aligned with the European goals, and which need to be realised by 2012. One of them is an increase in consumption of energy from renewable sources in total consumption up to 10%. For this reason, on the terrace of the Municipal Building at Korzo 16, a system of 44 solar photovoltaic panels of 9.9 kW power has been installed. It is estimated that the production of electrical energy, given the average insolation in Rijeka, would reach about 9000 kWh annually. The approximate area of the photovoltaic panels is somewhat below 75 sq. m., and the cost of the first solar plant in Rijeka amounts to 290 thousands kuna.

Ecological advantage of using solar energy

Mayor Vojko Obersnel pointed out that the first solar plant is the first system that directly produces electrical energy, and its effects are multiple. After having acquired the status of the privileged producer, income from "solar electrical energy" to be distributed by the City to HEP (national energy supplier), would amount to about 30,000 kuna annually, which makes this investment a profitable project. However, the most important effect of using solar panels is an ecologic advantage, as this solar plant alone will reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 2,72 tons, which in the overall working life of the solar plant of about 25 years, amounts to as much as 68 tons of reduced emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The works on installation and connection of the solar plant were carried out by the company Elektrokovina from Rijeka, while system management, maintenance, and further sale of electrical energy will be handled by Energo. Soon it will be possible to observe the work of the solar plant on the web site of the company Energo.
The photovoltaic systems can be installed on flat and pitched roofs, while energy systems up to 10 kW are ideal for installation on high-rise buildings. Produced electrical energy, as desired, can be used for one's own purposes or be further distributed to the electrical network, i.e. be sold to the power distributor. The value of the investment by one kW amounts to about EUR 5,000 .

Campaign "European Solar Days" in Rijeka

The presentation of the solar energy is part of the celebration of the "European Solar Days", campaign that last year included 13 countries, and within which more than 4000 different events were organised. This initiative included an exhibition dedicated to solar energy organised on the Korzo where children attending kindergartens in Rijeka presented their works, furthermore an organised visit for citizens to the solar plant, and a workshop with the topic "The possibilities of implementing solar energy in public utility energy supplies".

Centre Zamet, a new architectonic wonder in Rijeka

Rijeka, 10 September 2009

Yesterday, a new sports hall was opened in Rijeka, another big investment in the city's sports infrastructure. It is a modern public complex located near the market and the primary school, which in addition to the sports hall will include a library, an office of the local committee Zamet, a number of commercial facilities, a public square and a garage. The sports hall has been designed to host various sports competitions and cultural events.

Another big investment made by the City of Rijeka

Architectonically, the Centre Zamet has been perfectly integrated into the surrounding terrain owing to the architecture bureau "Studio 3LHD" from Zagreb, that in Rijeka has already projected the Memorial Bridge, monument to Croatian defenders, awarded on several occasions so far. The complex consists of the new sports hall, of the total area of 6,768 sq. m, shopping and service facilities of the area of 1,582 sq. m, and public squares of the area of 4,283 sq. m. The new access road that enables a link with the primary school and the hall, as well as with the shopping and service facilities from the northern side is important for the Centre Zamet.

The underground garage with 250 parking spaces, including parking spaces for disabled and for motorcycles, is situated under the hall and the shopping and service facilities. Uniquely designed, nuanced ceramic tiles reminding of rocks or a handball ball give the whole complex a specific feature, as there are more than 51.000 such tiles laid in the building. The tiles were used to form the sign "Centre Zamet" inserted into the square in front of the hall, that can be easily noticed already when observed from the first floor, and the architects say that the sign will be visible through popular Google Earth search. As explained by the architect, Silvije Novak, although the complex is completed, for its full integration with the environment, it still misses greenery, that according to his words, will be in abundance, and its decoration is to follow soon.

The indoor playground with its size, owing to a system with telescopic stands, enables the arrangement of floor seats in two parallel handball grounds. This is achieved by movable blinds or partitions. The main stands have 2198 seats, and nearby is the VIP seating area that can accommodate 128 visitors. Thus, the auditorium has at its disposal overall 2326 seats, and additional 23 seats for disabled. The hall has been designed for major international sports competitions in compliance with the state-of-the-art world sports standards, and the parquet floor has been manufactured in conformity with the International Basketball Federation, FIBA. On the fourth level, which is actually the first floor, impressive hall premises are situated intended for clubs, the management board and VIP persons etc.

The main entrance to the hall is on the western side at the square level. When the hall is regularly used for training and recreation, this entrance is designed for all the users – sportsmen, employees, recreationists and visitors. During competitions or events, the entrance is exclusively intended for spectators.

The accompanying facilities are located in the northern part of the hall, and they include locker rooms with showers for sportsmen, judges, official persons, and trainers, as well as outpatient clinics and anti-doping rooms. Near the entrance hall, as a separate unit, are saunas, massage rooms and a trim cabinet.

Within the shopping and service facilities, the complex will provide various services. It is expected that the restaurant, fitness centre and tobacco store will start with operation in a couple of months. Furthermore, the premises of the local committee Zamet of the total area of 190 sq. m. are also situated there and a hall with 90 seats. Also, a branch of the City Library Rijeka of the area of 409 sq. m. including a library storage, is located in the commercial part.

According to mayor Vojko Obersnel who visited the centre in the company of the architect and the director of the company Rijeka sport, Zlatan Hreljac, the premises of the local committee and the library should be put in operation in about three weeks. Mayor Obersnel said to the media that the most important fact is that the sportsmen have got excellent work premises. Obersnel reiterated that a precondition for big investments in sports infrastructure in Rijeka, is that after their completion, a maximum number of people, in particular young ones, should practice sports activities.

The Centre Zamet project was financially supported by S Immorent Leasing International Holding d.o.o. Zagreb, and the constructor was the company "GP Krk". The building costs of the Centre Zamet amount to HRK 152 million, increased by the costs of financing by way of an operating lease over a period of 25 years. The construction of the sports hall itself costs HRK 90 million.

The investor of the Centre Zamet is the company Rijeka sport d.o.o., in 100% ownership of the City of Rijeka, and the certificate of occupancy has been granted to the Centre Zamet – for the sports hall, the garage and the public surfaces of the centre.

The construction of the Centre Zamet with the sports hall is a reflexion of the sports tradition of that part of the city, in particular handball tradition. Namely, handball clubs Zamet (male club established in 1957, and female club established in 1958) have given numerous members of the national handball team and Olympic handball players.

After the swimming-pool complex at Kantrida, opened in July 2008, new turfgrass and the draining system laid at stadium Kantrida and the completion of this centre; the Athletic hall at Kantrida, which completion is expected in the first half of the next year, will continue this investment cycle, as well as a new diving pool, also within the complex at Kantrida, pointed out mayor Obersnel. here is some sort of timeline for rijeka road projects

this main roads are widened and opened in last year and couple of months.... and one big city tunnel (1.300m) with connection to the bypass will be opened in spring 2010. (I hope there will be no more prolongation, this road should have been opened in 2008 or 2009 as I remember)...

and this section form Sv. Kuzam to Krizisce is under construction...

alll other red and dark blue roads in this pic are not going to be built in near future.... this roads are still in the phase of research. exact corridors willl be published in 2010. when Rijeka (and Primorsko-Goranska county) traffic study is expected to be finished...

...

interesting

Rijeka bypas 1980. and 2009.
