@ambiente2008, Thanks for the images. Has Lisbon finally finished the waterfront development in front of Praça do Comércio? I remember it being very much under construction when I was last there. If so, what is there now and does it link well to the Praça do Comércio?

Piazza Navona is a city square in Rome, Italy. It follows the plan of an ancient Roman circus, the 1st century Stadium of Domitian, where the Romans came to watch the agones ("games"): It was known as 'Circus Agonalis' (competition arena). It is believed that over time the name changed to 'in agone' to 'navone' and eventually to 'navona'.

"Navona" is called for Naumachia (gr: ναυμαχία) a re-enactment of naval battles

This is the second biggest marked square of Belgium: Sint-Truiden(pop40.000)
It's a shame that it ended up in parking lot

It used to be worse in the 50ties-70ties:

Marked every three days for hundred of years and still today!

The Shopping streets leading to the market are today alos used to host the marked:

In summer time it's used to host several shows a year:

The freakin' awesome Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, which is reported on the 50-cent Italian Euro coin.

The square was realized under the features of the Michelangelo's design, which were reported by the French architect Étienne Dupérac.

Zürichs main square is currently renewed with pavement:

Currently the project is halted because of findings from the Bronze age

This would be the closest thing to a 'huge European paved square":

There are few squares in Greece and most of them very small. They are thought to be, and actually are, a magnet for immigrants/homeless/drug addicts. Possibly because people here don't have the habit of gathering and recreating in squares, and are generally considered a waste of space....and even though everyone demands more, they don't care about it afterwards.
