A Brief History of Acapulco

The first inhabitants of the area that is now Acapulco, Mexico were the Nahuas, a tribe of people that preceded the Aztecs. In 1521 the Spaniard Francisco Chico arrived and named it Santa Lucía. The city became a key trading port between Asia and America, which soon attracted infamous pirates such as Sir Francis Drake, Sir Thomas Cavendish, and Sir Henry Morgan (editor's note - maybe that's why I like this city so much). To defend the lucrative port, the Spaniards built Fuerte de San Diego, which repelled pirates until an earthquake destroyed the fort in 1776. Following the timeline, the city was razed in 1810 during the War of Independence but became a prominent port again during the gold rush in Panama.

Acapulco became a popular tourist destination for Europeans after 1920. In the 1950s, after successful efforts to build the city's infrastructure including numerous resort hotels, Acapulco became a vacation destination for the rich and famous of Hollywood and across the world. In the 1960s and 70s, a greater range of accommodations were built to make it more affordable for vacationers. And in the 1990s, a road was built from Mexico City, enabling vacationers from all over Mexico to enjoy this beautiful resort city.

Acapulco Guerrero

The La Quebrada Cliff Divers

The La Quebrada Cliff Divers are a group of professional high divers, based in Acapulco, Mexico. They perform daily shows for the public, which involve diving 35 metres (125 ft) from the cliffs of La Quebrada into the sea below. The depth of water in the "Gulch" can vary from 6 to 16 feet depending on the waves, with an average depth of 12 feet. Timing is crucial for the divers. During the night, they often hold torches while diving.

Acapulco cliff diving was regularly featured on weekend sports television programming in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s when the USA High Diving Team competed with the La Quebrada Cliff Divers annually during the Acapulco Christmas Festival. The 2002 Guinness Book of World Records lists this as "the highest regularly performed headfirst dives" in the world.

Although cliff diving at La Quebrada had taken place for many years, it was not until 1934 that the La Quebrada Cliff Divers was formed. One of the more famous Cliff Divers was Raoul Garcia. Swiss bigband leader, playboy, club owner and hotelier Teddy Stauffer (1909 - 1991), the man who is credited with turning Acapulco into a world class resort,(and for some time managed the El Mirador Hotel at La Quebrada) actually turned the boys, who were diving from the cliffs there, into stars, some ten years later. He is remembered as "Mr. Acapulco" to this day.

ABC Wide World of Sports popularized La Quebrada during the 1970s as one of the early extreme sports. Professional high divers worldwide regard La Quebrada as one of their favorites.

Acapulco Guerrero Fort

El Fuerte de San Diego Review

Acapulco's fort was built in 1616 to protect the city's lucrative harbor and wealthy citizens from pirate attacks. Although it was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1776, it was entirely restored by the end of that century. Today the fort houses the excellent Museo Histórico de Acapulco (Acapulco History Museum).

Bilingual videos and text explain exhibits tracing the city's history from the first pre-Hispanic settlements 3,000 years ago through the exploits of pirates like Sir Francis Drake, the era of the missionaries, and up to Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821. There are also displays of precious silks, Talavera tiles, exquisitely hand-tooled wooden furniture, and delicate china. A visit to the fort is a wonderful way to learn about and appreciate the history of this old port city.

Cathedral, Acapulco, Mexico

Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, Acapulco, Mexico.

Located in El Zócalo, the main traditional plaza, near El Malecón.

Situated in one of the oldest parts of Acapulco, this church was built in 1930 and named Nuestra Seńora de la Soledad. One of its main characteristics is a dome built in the style of traditional mosques, accompanied by two Byzantine-looking towers. The atmosphere inside is enlivened by yellow and gold tiles and walls painted in white and blue. For many of the local worshippers, the most beautiful attraction is the statue of Christ lying in a crystal coffin

Acapulco Guerrero

The history of Acapulco dates back all the way to a time before the Aztecs. An ancient tribe called the Nahuas first settled the city we know as Acapulco- which means 'where the reeds stood,' or 'the place of giant reeds.' These people were eventually conquered by the Aztecs, who, in turn, we defeated by the Spanish Conquistadors.

Acapulco's Fort San Diego is rich in historyWith the arrival of the Spanish, Acapulco became a key port between America and Asia. As a result, such famous pirates as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Henry Morgan came to call on this port. The Spaniards responded by building Fort San Diego, which originally stood until an earthquake destroyed it in 1776. You can still tour this Fort today, which was rebuilt and again razed during the 1810 Mexican War of Independence.

Acapulco regained prominence in the early 1900s as the gold rush spread to Panama. Upon the 1927 completion of a road linking Acapulco to Mexico City, Acapulco first gained prominence as a tourist destination among Mexico's own citizens. The European set followed shortly thereafter,

In the 1950s, a new international airport was built and Acapulco became a booming resort, with its reputation as a playground for the rich and famous jet-set. This caught the attention of the booming film industry in Hollywood, California. Movie stars such as Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis Presley made Acapulco famous through both film and song.

Part of that Acapulco still exists, in Old Acapulco (Acapulco Viejo). But, more recently, many new and larger resort-style hotels have been built along the main road, the Costera, which tracks along Acapulco Bay. As the growth continues, Acapulco's reach now extends beyond the bay towards new luxury condominiums and golf clubs on the eastern side.

Acapulco is now part of Spring Break History

So how does Acapulco history intertwine with Spring Break? Once again, MTV helps highlight this destination and make it mainstay for the college crowd. Having filmed numerous different shows in Acapulco (including Spring Break Undercover in 2001, Road-Rules vs. Real World All-Stars, and others), MTV knows a good party when they see one. The same is true today, as Acapulco continues to gain popularity among Spring Breakers looking for sun, sand, and all-night parties.
