The Coffee House of Baker style architecture is a significant landmark of Trivandrum. If I remember correctly there is no staircase but a winding slope till the top with chairs and tables laid out on the sides. I think it was originally designed in this manner for the coffee house

ya, the Indian Coffee House building at Thampanoor, Trivandrum was designed by Brtish born Indian Architect, 'Laurie Baker.'

"Laurence Wilfred "Laurie" Baker (March 2, 1917 – April 1, 2007) was an award-winning British-born Indian architect, renowned for his initiatives in cost-effective energy-efficient architecture and for his unique space utilisation and simple but beautful aesthetic sensibility. He went to India in 1945 in part as a missionary and since then lived and worked in India for over 50 years. He obtained Indian citizenship in 1989 and resided in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala. In 1990, the Government of India awarded him with the Padma Shri in recognition of his meritorious service in the field of architecture"

You can find more about him at..

As Arijeet said that building is like a spiral structure with ramps winding up along a central core where the kitchen, wash etc were placed, at different levels. There were no movable tables/chairs, the sitting and dining was in brick platforms which is joined with the sidewalls. The passage winding up is along the central core. The bearers had to walk up and down along this sloping ramp like thing.

You can find the interior pics here..

Cool thread idea. Infosys has really good campus designs. This thread has also made me want to go to Indian Coffee House.

same thoughts here. If the outside was given a fresh coat of that colonial british red color, this would be one of the landmark building for trivandrum.

whoever designed this building must have mistaken his child's drawings for his blueprint.
