This now needs to be moved to Completed Projects.

To compliment Reiss' photos, visited this myself on Saturday.

Welcome to the forum Geoff. Whilst I am loathed to defend Tesco (i'm not a fan of theirs), I suspect the application is as a result of someone wanting to take space within the scheme. The nature of the tenants intended use probably falls outside the existing consent. I can't see them having a vested interest in this type of use and I'm actually surprised they are willing to let to them (being aware that this might not be popular with the neighbours).

I went today to check it out, there is nothing there... A giant Tesco, fair enough, but not big/different enough to set it apart from the others in the West Mids; a Costa Coffee, a 99p store, and a Greggs. That's pretty much it other than some aisle clutter for Virgin Media etc. Lovely centre, just mostly vacant, for now. Which is weird since there are a lot of stores around it.

The refurb of the tower has been done very nicely. Would have very much liked to have seen the same done with Edgbaston shopping centre (too late now).

I think it will be much better when the vacant units are filled, overall a nice center and a BIG improvement from the old one

lol.. cheeky.. I was in Dudley Extra today and couldn't believe how many staff there were. Looks like they are improving on their staff numbers again.

Did you go in the cafe? It might as well be a cloakroom, tiny little place.

Not really, no. But I did notice one major flaw with these huge stores. They are massive. Swan Centre and New Oscott make sense because you have a mezzanine level, and you only go up there if you need something or just want to peruse. Dudley and eventually West Brom, are on one surface and to negotiate your way around a massive store like that, especially if you forgotten something in one of the opposite corner ends becomes a bit of a mission. The only saving grace today was that it wasn't busy. I like a large store but I think that the land space they need to take up has gotten a bit daft lately and some more intelligent design needs to come into play. In a report I saw in Reuters ages ago, they even appear to acknowledge this and mentioned that part of their problem in terms of customer satisfaction is that some of their stores are too big- so expect smaller stores in the future -West Brom could be the last of the titans.

I really think Tesco lost a chance to take over Woolworths - that's really what their mega stores are trying to be but with a Tesco still attached selling groceries.

Yeah Dudley is massive, and yet the cafe, toilets, etc are all disproportionately small.

Hoardings are up for a Brantano footwear no opening date on there though. It's opposite Tesco, if you look at NeilM's second photo above it's the second or third unit on the right.

Tesco have now added more departments, they include an Opticians, Hair and Beauty Salon, Halal Butchers and a Pizza counter. And the store is now complete. Brantano are fitting out one of the units, but no opening date yet. The first charity shop as also opened, probably the first of many.

Swan centre seems to be struggling compared with new square

Although its not ideal having charity shops they are better than empty units I guess, also probably be on a short term contract so can be replaced if a tennant does come along
