There's not a particular group of death and yet there's also not a weak group.

The video clip is actually really cool, but what bothers me is that the music is exactly the same as the Euro 2008 intro. Im not saying that it's bad, its just it would have been better with a different song.

Don't believe in qualifying. Top 8 teams should qualify automatically based on their FIFA ranking. Consistent performance over the years prior to the event must be considered.

Its better for sponsors, and the general marketing and organization.'

Its ludicrous that e.g. a team wins the WC but still has to qualify to Euro, as if its not good enough.

Same should apply for the WC.

That really isnt a good idea. How boring would the tournament get and why wouldnt you give the same chance to all countries? Look at euro2008, England didnt make it and let Russia show that they are good. just cuz a team is good and has a good record doesnt mean they deserve it. Plus it wasnt any worse marketing wise without a team like england in it.

^Agreed, it should be all about competition, if we went with Mo Rush's idea we wouldn't have had contests like France vs Ireland and Russia vs Slovenia/Slovakia (I get mixed up ).

I think you've missed the point somwhat. Nobody thinks Italy aren't good enough for the Euros, or that they need to prove anything to anyone, but the slate is wiped clean to allow every team an equal chance of getting to each tournament. It doesn't matter if you're Italy or Poland or England or Andorra, in theory you can get there and have as much chance as anyone else. The seedings take care of keeping the big teams apart.

Besides which, what would you propopse teams like Spain and Brazil do between tournaments if they don't have competitive qualifiers to play in? Two years is a long time not to play a competitive fixture.

Despite what you say, sponsors won't like your idea much either. If Carlsberg beer, for example, finds that 10 competitive England matches, vital for the team's qualification no longer exist, and are instead replaced by meaningless friendlies with much, much lower TV audience figures and much, much lower potential exposure for their brand, do you think they'll be happy? Of course they won't. Any brand associating themselves with the England national team will have a two year hiatus in which their association cannot be leveraged! If you then expand that across every brand in the top 8 footballing countries across Europe, you're losing a helluva lot of business.
I'm sure UEFA would love that Mo!

What you're suggesting is having no competitive international fixtures for Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Germany, France and England for a period of two years. The only competitive matches these teams would ever play would be in the tournaments themselves (which actually means they'd rarely, if ever, play a competitive match on home soil!!)

And national FAs and UEFA would hate the idea. In England, for example, you'd be replacing five eagerly anticipated 90,000 seat sell-outs at Wembley with some meaningless friendlies which would never draw those sorts of crowds.

Sorry Mo, you have a lot of good things to say, but this suggestion is nuts!

Any line drawn in this regard is too arbitrary, but especially so based on FIFA rankings. How is it that the #8 team is so deservedly better than the #9 team? (Answer: They're not.) What if a team garners the #2 ranking and then drops a host of veterans before the tournament? And if the top 8 are so good, what's the point of a tournament with 12 or more teams? Or having any tournament, for that matter?

Bottom line, if a team is good enough they'll earn their way in. Griping about it simply reeks of entitlement and delusion.

Key point, here. These games make money and keep the national team in the spotlight for longer periods. Plus there is often very little differentiating the sides we'd try to rank between 3-12.

Regardless, as long as Italy loses early I'm happy! And if they miss out all together then I'm buying the first round!!

No groups of death but I think there are 2 groups where the winner is a given but the race for 2nd will be heavy. Group I - Spain should win it but Scotland and the Czech Republic aren't pushovers. Group A - Turkey, Belgium and Austria lining up behind favorite Germany.
